OnlySunshine
This thread is for Chiara Francesco. I've been looking for these sandals and I've found one that you might be interested in. It doesn't have an ankle strap but it is nice and not too expensive ($22.95): Dark brown chocolate espadrilles They are made in Spain, too. I'm continuing to look for a sandal with all the features you are looking for.
OnlySunshine
I don't know what size you are looking for but someone is selling a pair on eBay that closely match with what you are looking for at a very low price: Flat Ankle Tie Espadrille Sandals

I didn't post them because I didn't know what price range CF was looking for. These run a little above $50. http://www.toms.com/womens?view=all
AnneLine
At this link, you can choose colors and style of straps as well as size... select the 'custom' option.... Chiquitunga
If you want to start a new one, I'll start looking for the sandals. I believe they are called alpargatas/espadrilles.

Not all Carmels wear these, nor do PC/PCCs. As far as I know, these are only made in certain Carmels like Sheffield in the UK and maybe by the Valpraiso/Elysburg Carmels here in the States? and not for the public. Sandals these 2 orders or good Franciscans or Dominicans, etc wear. I keep seeing sandals that are too fancy or not the right style. I did see some in my local Walmart back in June and thought I'd buy later - now I wish I bought them and another pair!
Valparaiso does not, although they might now, as I heard Elysburg recently starting making them. Other Carmels that make them are .. Buffalo, Brooklyn, Alexandria, Iron Mt., I'm guessing Wichita & I think Lake Elmo .. and yes Sheffield/Kirk Edge .. possibly Cristo Rey .. But if the Carmel doesn't make them themselves, I've never heard of them getting these from other sources. They usually opt then for a birkenstock-like sandal. Is that more of what you're looking for Chiara? although of course it'd be neat to have alpargatas .. but as long as they're not made there/worn by the whole community, regular sandals would be a good option too. One thing good about them at least is that they do provide better support.
Chiara Francesco
Thanks Mater, these are great but not what I'm looking for either! But here's "Jesus Sandals" - http://holyland4jesus.com under sandals! Some look ok like these ... these ... these ... a few others. (Don't think these links are showing?) Or these sandals from Bass: https://bassshoes.harborghb.com/bass-sunjuns-womens Edited November 2, 2012 by Chiara Francesco
Chiquitunga
Great sandals there Chiara! Also I wanted to say .. I seriously do appreciate your research here, MM! Now we know what to look up if we happen to be searching for sandals like this .. like the key words flat ankle tie espadrilles or alpargatas. That is very helpful! And that eBay listing looked just like them! (without the black of course, although Iron Mt.'s are darker maybe black actually, also mostly I've seen Carmelites wear ones with open toes, though sometimes they're closed like St. Therese's posted above) Here are Brooklyn's a couple pictures here from San José .. http://www.sanjosede...hp#!prettyPhoto a picture from our :j book on the Incarnation hers tie up like these, and in case anyone is wondering about the leggings she seems to be wearing, they are "the stockings, which for decency are worn, should be of woolen or coarse cloth, or something similar" - Constitutions by the way, I recently found this ..little excerpts from the 1928, 1990 & 1991 Constitutions on the habit .. note, this is not meant to start a debate, the author of this post has a great love and respect for all Carmels, especially his in the Philippines, which are all under the 91s .. they do have the Alcalá Constitutions (1581s - which is what the 1990s are with some adaptions) in their appendix now for a little fun ... I don't think you'll find any type of Carmel wearing these
They didn't all wear them in Kirk Edge - actually I would say that the majority didn't wear them simply because they did have to be hand made and this took quite a long time. The other problem with them is that when they get wet they are pretty miserable to wear (being hemp they are a fabric) - so they had to wear wooden clogs over them in the laundry and when they went outside. Most of the nuns there preferred to wear a simple sandal and this has been the norm at all of the Carmels where I have been. Some of them even allow closed shoes now, especially for those who have special foot needs. I find it hard to get a sandal I really like. I wear a type of mule right now (similar to a Croc but with an inner removeable lining with a strap at the heel) but I would really like a good pair of brown sandals before I go back. I don't like open toes because my foot catches going up stairs (I am clumsy and probably don't lift my foot high enough when I walk) but it isn't easy to find a closed toe sandal that looks like a sandal. I love the look of some of the Jesus or Jerusalem sandals but I couldn't wear most of them - don't like anything around my toe and the straps would keep falling down on me. And I can't wear a mule with no back because I can't keep it on my foot! Footwear is a real pain as far as I am concerned - the bare feet of the Poor Clares sound great to me - but only if the monastery has underfloor heating

Something like this might work for you because the strap is anchored and wouldn't fall down, plus it's closed toe: Softspots Higby in Mocha Walking Cradles Angel (tobacco colored) Edited November 3, 2012 by MaterMisericordiae

But that second one - the cradles angel looks really good. Even though it appears to have a slight heel - the way they fill it in makes it looks less like a slant - so I wouldn't be as likely to turn my ankle. I really like the look of the second one. Thanks!! I have to think about that. The international shipping costs might be a lot though.

I don't know what customs I might have to pay for international shopping so I try to stay in the country where I am living when I shop online but it isn't always easy to find what I want.
