As I said before, this is something that people can easily mistakenly turn a phrase and say something that is wrong without necessarily meaning to. The quoted phrase from freedom is absolutely inaccurate, one does not become worthy of God's love or forgiveness; God freely offers His love, and He freely offers His forgiveness to us when we repent from our sins. But our repentance is not a way to merit God's forgiveness, by no means, our repentance is imperfect; certainly God calls upon us to repent, and forgives us when we do repent, especially through the sacrament of confession, but that doesn't make the repentance into something that merits the forgiveness, the forgiveness is still offered to us undeservedly, through the merits of Christ's death on the Cross.

I'd give Freedom the benefit of the doubt though, there's a veritable theological minefield standing between Pelagianism and Donatism and Jansenism.
