Aloysius
It's distracting me from doing reading and writing papers and all that stuff... what, you think I care if the flame war burns down phatmass? mods please. btw, here's the words of wisdom for anyone who's getting a hernia over the politics, one of my favorite quotes of all time: "For at present we all tend to one mistake; we tend to make politics too important. We tend to forget how huge a part of a man's life is the same under a Sultan and a Senate, under Nero or St Louis[, under Barack Obama or Mitt Romney]. Daybreak is a never-ending glory, getting out of bed is a never-ending nuisance; food and friends will be welcomed; work and strangers must be accepted and endured; birds will go bedwards and children won't, to the end of the last evening." -GK Chesterton
MIKolbe
so you're saying Chesterton woulda voted for Ron Paul?
Aloysius
Lol, that's not the point of the quote at all; the point was that no matter who you're supporting, don't let it divide people. We have allowed political rhetoric to seep into us far too much, especially within the Church, to the point where Fr. Z puts out mugs celebrating canon 915 and denial of communion to people who don't vote our way... I forget which blog I saw it in, I think it might've been Bad Catholic, but someone basically said that Catholics are supposed to be the leaven in society but instead we've allowed politics to become the leaven within the Church, and that's a bad thing. Or maybe I just imagined seeing that in a blog and I've made it up myself... lol I dunno. I don't know who Chesterton would've voted for... he never lost faith in classical liberalism, just in classical liberals I don't think he'd have voted for either Mitt or Barack. I can't find an online version of the two articles Dale Ahlquist wrote in Gilbert! as to why he's not voting for Romney, but he's got some great little quotes from Chesterton in there about how voting is an art and all that, which would be good. I'm probably not allowed to type it all out from the print version for copyright reasons and all that, but when I get home tonight I'll look for the quotes to share. Luigi
I figured out a long time ago that it doesn't matter who the president it. I still have to get up and go to work, I still have to sit in traffic on the way home, I still have to take out the trash, I stil have to.... The country survives in spite of our politicians, not because of them.

Ash Wednesday
Al, if you didn't start it, someone else would have. Honestly the forum really hasn't been that caustic with regards to politics this year, certainly not compared to other election seasons. The subject matter and disagreements about it are to be expected. Politics on the forum in 2004 was Godzilla. 2012 is Bambi in comparison.

I cannot remember the circumstances though.
