The context is that Sweet Tooth, the new villain in Gotham City who kills with candy, has kidnapped Robin and is forcing Batman to choose to either save Gotham or his best friend Robin. Sweet Tooth sets up a facebook poll where the people of Gotham City either vote for Batman to either save Robin and have Sweet Tooth poison the city's water supply with a warhead or for Batman to save Gotham's water supply and have Robin die. Batman announces on facebook that he is going to save Robin and let Gotham's people die. President Obama calls Superman to arrest Batman for refusing to help the city in need. Superman agrees since the president convinces him that The American Way is to help people and he has a grudge against Batman anyway. He wanted to be friends with him and left him voice messages, but Batman never called him back. Superman and other characters proceed to sing about what The American Way actually is.
