Not Voting Because You're Displeased With Candidates

Opinions?

Personally, I think this is irresponsible and lazy and a cop-out. Friends of mine aren't voting because they don't think Romney is "good enough," even though they agree he is better than Obama. I think this is awful, because by not voting, they're throwing away their vote and making it easier for Obama to win.

Everyone needs to vote who is of age, IMO.

What do y'all think about this?
Do a little research on the Catholic perspective.

2240 Submission to authority and co-responsibility for the common good make it morally obligatory to pay taxes, to exercise the right to vote, and to defend one's country:

1919 Every human community needs an authority in order to endure and develop.
<a name="1920">1920 "The political community and public authority are based on human nature and therefore . . . belong to an order established by God" (GS 74 § 3).

1750 The morality of human acts depends on:
- the object chosen;
- the end in view or the intention;
- the circumstances of the action.

-Do you think you have any obligation to vote, to participate in the political community?
-Seemingly it seems you have an obligation to participate.
-How will you participate, and what do you hope to accomplish by your action or inaction?
-What is the reasonably anticipated and likely outcome of your action or inaction?

I think not voting as a protest is a cop out.
I don't think that casting a vote for a 3rd option President sends any kind of "message". Voting is easy, reflects a limited population, and is a very dilluted message because your vote, or non-vote can be interpreted into a million reasons why by political analysts. Is it because you aren't enthused about the close second runner up? Did you because you don't like the political system, or just one specific policy of the 3rd Canidate, such as their economic policy, or their foreign policy, or because of their pro-life policy? Who's to know?

There are public opinion polls done regularly on specific issues. In the political arena, leading Canidates are running on a broad range of policy's in their attempt to be appealing to the maximum amount of voters, balancing between alienating the fewest and differentiating themselves from the next leading Candidate.

Making known that you are against abortion is not communicated well in the Presidential Election becasue of the broad range of issues that are in play. Participation in Anti-Abortion rallys, where politicians see people willing and able to walk the street makes them see it as an issue people are committed too. Supporting community programs that provide assistance to un-wed mothers, orphanages, foster care, etc., shows that Right-to-Life issues are important enough to contribute time, energy, and money.

The Federal Government is not the Do-All and End-All solution to these issues. The problem of Abortion is not going to be solved if a law preventing it was enacted this afternoon. The problem of Abortion isn't that it's legal, it's because people see it as the only solution to a difficulty. Real assistance with money, support, a shoulder, a sympathetic ear, will never be provided by a Government Agency. The Righteous People who shun the un-wed mother in the Church Community, who gossips about the pregnant teen, who kicks their daughter out of the house because she's having sex, who views a bastard as a different class of person are the fundamental reasons why people turn to abortion. What flooping law fixes that?

Personally, I believe that if you want to benefit from society and the government, you also have civic duties. Police officers, Firemen, Trash collection, public schools, city water...if you benefit from any of these services, you have an obligation to vote. Or move out to the country, buy a gun, drill a well, plant a garden, and compost your garbage. Then you might have a better argument for not voting. But at the same time, people died so you can vote. I have strong opinions about that. If you don't like any major candidate, vote third party. Or write someone in.

Very recently, Romeny actually said that he's not going to defund Planned Parenthood, or actively do anything to promote the pro-life cause.

WHOA! No need for Romney to prove Al, myself, and others right before the election........he could at least wait until he wins.....and THEN back down from the so called "pro-life" position he claims.

I respect Romney in that he has some cojones. Usually politicians back down on their promises after they are elected, but Romney is already starting on that process.
Have you considerred that Romney is backing away from that position (verbally) because the majority of women who are voting actually find defunding of Planned Parenthood as a negative and that is why Obama has been leading with women voters? Mitt has gained in the percentage of women who would vote for him versus Barak. It's politics on the national scale. It's how it is done. Hard and strict to build your base, softer and vaguer to broaden the appeal to the un-decided. It's a very close race.

So if there was popular support via a Congressman or Senator to begin a push to defund PP next year, would it have more chance of being vetoed by Barak or Mitt, given the positions of the R & D parties and the majority of the voting base. It takes the Congress to introduce a Bill, pass it, and then send to the President for Signature or Veto. Which Party members have vetoed and emascualted the Partial Birth Abortion Ban over the last few decades? It's a PRESIDENT, not a Dictator.

Yup, I've totally considered that. I'm voting third party. I was just pointing it out for everyone else's benefit. :)
