Birgitta Noel
Was yesterday a holy day of obligation?
theculturewarrior
I am pretty sure it is transfered to the following Sunday in the States. But don't take my word. Ask your parish priest. God bless. (And don't hate yourself for what you didn't know!)
Birgitta Noel
I don't hate myself, just feel sheepish for not checking real closely and going to the mall when if I had made the effort to check I might have been able to make a mass. THen again I don't remember hearing anything about it here except that at the Brothers they were celebrating on Thurs, not sunday.....hmmm, maybe that's my clue that it wasn't..... Thanks :-)

Birgitta Noel
YAY!!!!! Thanks, I didn't even think to check the daily readings to figure it out!!! You are soooooo smart!
Dave
Actually, the Ascension is transferred to the following Sunday only in some states. My home state of Georgia is one of them. In your case, Birgitta, you live in Illinois. Last time I checked, that wasn't one of them. Sorry.

Birgitta Noel
Don't know about IN, just found out that in IL, in the Diocese of Peoria at least, it was NOT a holy day of obligation as it has been transferred to this coming Sunday.
Iacobus
Your Bishop is the one that moves it. Seeing as Father didn't say anything about it last Sunday or Saturday at Mass I think it was moved here too. Here is Rockford IL
jasJis
99% sure that all US Diocese moved it to Sunday. It would be the exception to have not moved it.
Lil Red
my diocese abrogated it!
Colleen
Yeah, they moved it to Sunday in my diocese too. Here's the explanantion from the diocese:
Observing the Ascension on the seventh Sunday of Easter allows for heightened celebration and an increased opportunity to education people about the meaning of the feast.
Okaay. BLAZEr
Yes, it was moved becaue modern exegesis has determined that Christ ascended 43 days after Easter, not 40. Or maybe it's just because the bishops are a hapless bunch of lazy butts who don't want people to feel "guilty" that they will skip a Holy Day of Obligation. It has not been transferred in Pennsylvania, New York, Boston, Washington D.C. and some other dioceses . . . but most of the Bishops have moved it to Sunday, cuz, well, I'll bite my tongue.
