Freedom
I was a Catholic convert and now I am not religious at all. I still love Catholicism though. So you converted to Catholicism, became not religious yet still love it but don't believe in God?
zabbazooey
I love the tradition, the history, the culture. But my own personal path took me elsewhere and I just don't believe in God. A lot of it was I felt called, a community I was discerning with was encouraging me to continue the process to enter. I freaked out, stopped going to Mass and became a little more worldly. I tried out other churches but really felt suffocated by following rules. I especially disliked rules on abstinence, contraceptives, and hated 5 hours of church on Sundays but that was a Mormon thing. Honestly the Mormons were so pushy and demanding of their members and that is what pushed me away from religion and eventually God. I will say I still get urges to pray or go to Mass, start fresh. But I suppress it because the whole experience was painful and I'm done with it. I don't always feel that my disbelief in a God is always gone though. Sometimes I get little flickers where I feel that same warm feeling like when I was at adoration. I'm okay with where I am now.
zabbazooey
And I guess I am a black and white thinker, but another reason why I won't go back is I have tried to change my mind and accept church teaching on many issues, and I just can't. I have really thrown myself into it and I don't agree with some of the teachings. And I would rather just not go than be a cafeteria Catholic. Freedom
It was a painful experience because of attending Mormon churches or a Catholic Mass?
zabbazooey
Well I had a strong desire to be a sister, whether it was God's calling I cannot say. But the draw was so strong and I felt at peace when I went there. I expressed a desire to enter and they encouraged my discernment. They wanted me to come and visit for periods of time and continue a year of school at my all women's catholic college. Well I just kind of freaked out at the idea of entering and not experiencing life so I did a 180 and dropped church. That was painful for me. The Mormons...they would just pressure me to pretty much dedicate my life to church. Tithe 10%, fast offerings, volunteering, soooo many ward activities, family home evening, missionary visits, visiting teachers, temple sessions, Relief Society and don't forget church trips!!!! Wow too much church. And I could not afford a 10% tithe. They made me feel like I was robbing God when I couldn't give the full 10%. They more drive me away from organized religion. I wasn't temple worthy and was excluded from a lot of stuff and felt like an outcast.
Freedom
Thank you for sharing... I can see how that can scare you away to feel pressured and rushed without actually living. It seems you're older, getting more established and getting married. Congrats! Perhaps one day you should follow that urge and attend mass sometime ;)
Anastasia13
I am good. Just going to school for Speech-Language Pathology and hopefully starting a new job soon :) getting married in April to my boyfriend of 3 1/2 years Life is sweet :) How are you? Congrats! That is so exciting. :) Life has been up and down. I think I have some growing to do, but I have a better sense of where I want to end up than I did a year or two ago. This is good. It's much better than it was when I started university. You're had some great posts here about how we relate to others. I hope to see more of you back here. :) Edited December 10, 2012 by Light and Truth
Anastasia13
I believe most of us were Catholic once. I don't know about the Protestants they're weird, as usual. So why do ex-Catholics hang out on a Catholic website? I'm thinking it is something about a connection to the culture of Catholicism. Anastasia13
My guess is something cooler like ancient Greek paganism. All bow down in fear before Helios and Zeus! I think today we will go with Sikhism. http://youtu.be/VeAhqL38AGs

TeDeum
I remember in the military a while back, people would put Jedi on their dog tags for their religion. If I wasn't Catholic I think I'd choose to be a Jedi.
