Croat
I was today with my friends in a caffe bar. There was one tv next to us. There was some music channel on and like all mainstream music channels today it had some pretty indecent music videos( It was not an near occasion for sin for me but it probably was for my firends). I did not do nothing serious to avoid or prevent this situation. I did not know if the matter was serious enough, but I knew it was wrong. Was it obligatory for me to leave the caffe or to do something else? Did I incur mortal sin? Am I allowed to go with friends to discos and caffes with this kind of program on the tv? I tend to be scrupulous so I would appreciate if you can answer all of my 3 questions and explain to me which situations similar to this one I am obligated to avoid. Thank you!!!! Theoketos
No, but something would be amesome. Consider: I smashed a TV (my own) once for that reason. (Still have no tv 10 years later.) Another time I cut a wire so there would be no sound for the T.V. in counselors lounge at a Catholic Summer Camp in which we were watching lame movies. I also walked out of the Matrix 2. I was playing poker in the garage of my neighbors. Many men who are all good family men, even if blue collared, unchurched and with rough manners, were there. It was about 9 PM. Some one had had HBO on early in the evening on of the many stupid t.v.s. A salacious scene came on, so I simply walked over and turned the channel then set back down. (Lost that hand though.) No one said anything, except to complain that I did not turn it to some discovery channel show about digging for gold. One of the men speaking to me later about it, admitted he was a Christian and had been afraid to act. That I turned the channel "like a boss" gave him courage. No big deal though. If people gave me croutons about it, even if I could not defend myself it would bring Christ glory. No. If you have to ask... Probably. You could ask the owner for less obscene music/programing. I have. It worked because I was kind, polite, and spent money there often. Going and evangelizing this way seems to fit the great commission better than being a scrupulous shut in. I have been both ways. The former is much more pleasant. Sure, it has ended in martyrdom for some. Though again, what else could be better? For some though the experience is either one of shock or joy. Most of the time my requests for mildly less course background music or tv are met with "meh, ok."
