PhuturePriest
My atheist friend told me to read The Confessions of Saint Augustine because he makes a very good case against God. The Confessions of Saint Augustine was written to show how God saved him from his sins and changed his life, not to disprove him. Does anyone have a clue what this rhetoric is about? DiscerningCatholic
It would appear that he read the first ten minutes' worth and got bored. Tell him to try again.
EmilyAnn
I have to go with Groo and DC, I'm guessing he hasn't read the whole thing. Maybe you should ask him what he thinks the case it makes against God is. I am quite curious because I have read it and cannot see where he is coming from at all. BG45
Well it depends....it could be considered to be a case against God if one doesn't enjoy reading Augustine take 5 pages to make a point that could be summed up in a single paragraph at most. Otherwise, I'm with everyone else on this.
Basilisa Marie
There's absolutely no way your friend has read all of Augustine's Confessions. Your friend probably didn't even get to the Tolle Lege part.
Nihil Obstat
If St. Augustine had thought that his work might give even the tiniest shred of support to atheism, I guarantee you that he would have destroyed it before anyone else could read it. PhuturePriest
He gave me a section of the book, but I don't know where it is and I forgot what it says exactly.
To Jesus Through Mary
I am reading Confessions for the first time right now (Just got to the part where he met St Ambrose ), but even when he is speaking of his reasons for not believing in God, he seems to normally end the section with something like, "I didn't know I was searching for Truth" or "My heart was closed to Your Word"... At any rate, I guess you could ask your friend to tell you the section again and read it again.
