I don't know what parental rights you are talking about but in Texas it is perfectly legal for minors to drink under parental supervision.

I have a right to tell my kid she can have a beer at a party that I am not attending, or that she is free to drink in moderation.

The government doesn't rightfully get a say.

That is good. I highly approve of that. As a start. I am sure you can already figure out my general stance on drinking laws in general, but that arrangement is a pretty solid start which is more respectful of the family unit.

If I understand correctly, it varies state by state for you guys.

When I was on a cruise in the summer of 2011, at the age of 20, they would not serve me alcohol even in the presence of my parents. They would not even serve to him if they thought he was going to give it to me (which we did anyway several times). I think they had to follow the laws of the country whose flag they were flying, which I cannot remember now, or something along those lines. Very stupid situation. They certainly were not going by the laws of countries whose waters we were in, because the Italians and Croatians and Greeks were more than happy to serve my fifteen and seventeen year old brothers beer by the liter. Major props to the Mediterraneans. As I understand it, binge drinking is not a particular problem among young people in those countries, as compared to the US and Canada.

Who are you calling bro, comrade? That is both sexist and offensively hetero-normative.

I'm not sure what those words mean, but I do know your face is both of them.

I think the psychology of "If you tell someone not to do something, they will" fits here. My parents introduced liquor to me at a young age, telling me if I ever asked for a sip when they were drinking that would be fine. So I did. I learned liquor isn't a quarter of the deal teenagers who have never had a drop make it, and that it's just another liquid. Alcoholism runs high on both sides of my families, so my parents wanted to make sure that I was introduced to it at an early age so I wouldn't make a big deal out of it. And it worked. Reverse psychology is fun like that.

And as Winchester has pointed out, who is the government to tell my parents they don't know when I am mature enough to drink? New Zealand has the beautiful law that any minor can drink so long as an adult is there to monitor them. New Zealand's population hasn't been destroyed due to car wrecks, so I can only assume their law works out fine.

Pretty much, pretty much. It is the same with anything else. Guns are another solid example. Kids that grow up with guns in the house learn how to be safe with them. They learn how to shoot them in a controlled environment. Kids who grow up either without guns around, or with guns being some kind of completely off limits thing are not going to develop those safe habits.

Maybe if we trusted young people more, they would actually make an effort to live up to that trust. I do not think that is such a radical idea. Today we are infantilizing young people. There are the helicopter parents who want to shelter their kids from anything that looks vaguely threatening, but ultimately they are part of the problem, not the solution. They are making their kids afraid of things that go bump, and they are not allowing their kids to develop the skills and sense necessary to respond to those things when they reach an age at which the parents can no longer shelter them.

I also grew up around guns. I think we have somewhere around thirteen or more guns in the house, with tons of ammunition. I was introduced to guns as well when I was young, and I was never in awe at the sight of them and I never went and played with them. They were just guns to me. Of course now I'm like "Guns!!!! :woot: " but I was taught how to handle them properly. I also learned not to be afraid of them as well.

Precisely. This reminds me of parents who put their children in a space suit whenever they go bike riding. I don't know about you, but I don't remember wearing my helmet that much. All I had to safe me was my T-shirt and jeans (And sometimes shorts!). Did I fall and scrape my knees badly with blood everywhere from time to time? Yes. But I didn't die from it, and I learned from the experience. I basically did everything I wasn't supposed to do: Play with fire, have stick fights (I can't count the thousands of stick duels I had with my friend), we went around parading on other peoples' properties AS we played with sticks, etc. But I lived and I'm all the better for it. We need to stop teaching children that they can't be trusted and that they need to live in a bubble their whole lives, because if society hasn't noticed, the world is kind of going to hell at the moment, and falling off our widdle bikes and getting a scrape is the least of our problems in the near future.

Groo the Wanderer

i think Ryan should ask the veep if he would like to start with a prayer...then begin with 'Pater noster...'

That'll show 'em who the real Catholic is and who the cino is
