Papist
Bumped into this when looking at a link in another thread. http://dayofthegirl.org/
International Day of the Girl is a movement... to speak out against gender bias and advocate for girls’ rights everywhere. Shatter stereotypes | End injustices | Demand equality | Change the world! [background=transparent]“We want to be seen as equals, in the eyes of others AND in our own eyes.â€[/background]
I love girls and all. I even married one. But this stuff is unnecessary. It is as if we are admitting boys are better than girls. So we need to make up stuff to give girls the "feeling" they are equal or better. Maybe I am overreacting, but I do see this way too much, especially in commercial ads and TV shows.
MissyP89
With all due respect, bro, gender bias is still a real issue. Women are still treated as second on many levels, and in some ways we're still working to be recognized as equals. *Note: This doesn't mean women should be treated like men. It just means we should be given the same opportunities to succeed, which doesn't always happen.
arfink
I think today would be a perfect day to discuss why it is that girls are overwhelmingly the more likely sex to be aborted. Sex selective abortions must stop! We need our girls!

Please explain how events such as this international day of the girl, TV ads/shows depicting boys as idiots and girls always getting the better of the boys, etc. has an effect on this gender bias you are talking about? Nihil Obstat
Just because bias against men is fairly common does not mean that bias against women is gone. In my opinion campaigns like this can be a good thing, and there is a place for them absolutely. However in my experience things like this are often linked to unsavory things like abortion and contraception, and often blanket support for LGBT issues. Absent those things, I think campaigns like this can be great.

Are you arguing there are no injustices based on gender? If so, then yes, this is unneeded. Are you arguing near perfect equity (in society) between both genders? If so, then yes, this is unneeded. Are you arguing that societal pressures cannot effect the personal conscieneness of worth, as it concerns the above 3? If so, then yes, this is unneeded. Now granted, I have not read the whole site...but a snippet is...
History shows that it hasn’t ever been easy to be a girl, and, despite amesome changes in the status and perception of women and girls, herstory is still a complicated and challenging one.
Other than the really lame use of "herstory", does this really seem like an unbalanced approach? Yeah, it's a .little "rah-rah".. but so what? I know phools who get all 'cheerleader-y' about beer. I do agree, however, about guys who would be constantly seen as dolts; as you also elluded to...that is just as silly as guys doing the same...the ladies don't corner this market.... Are you over-reacting? yeah, a bit... oh, and hey.. go make me a sammich, son.

When I was in school (back a long time ago) there were "girls in science" and "girls in math" campaigns. And even now decades later, they are still pushing "girls in science" and "girls in math" events. I have yet to see a "boys writing" or "boys reading" push in the same way that I've seen for girls. Why is that?

We're either sex-crazed fiends that will rape you at any second or we're shown as complete idiots on television shows, whereas the women are the smart and logical ones who are always cleaning up after men and their idiotic antics.
