Spem in alium
Since June of this year I've been wearing the Scapular of Saint Joseph the Protector. I could only find one online seller, so ordered them there. While I love wearing my scapular, there's a let down in that the ones I ordered were not the best quality. I'd prefer ones that are all felt, but these aren't and the images and text on them fade. I paid about $1 for each, I think, plus around $10 for shipping to Aus. For some reason I only brought one scapular on exchange, and it's showing serious signs of wear. Does anyone know of any places online that sell better quality and affordable scapulars? I'd like to pay less for them so that I can buy in bulk Blessings

Nihil Obstat
Make sure look at the seller's reputation. If you want, when I get home I can check which seller I bought mine from. I am content with its quality.

AnneLine
Almost any Carmelite monastery would have some nice ones for a donation... and you'd be supporting the Nuns, too. If you want a LOT of them, give them a bit of a warning so they can put them together for you... I know the Carmel of Cristo Rey in San Francisco would do this if asked.... but I bet there are some in the area of your college who would be thrilled to help you.... I'll have a look and see if there's a Carmel near me. If not, I'll check out the one in San Francisco. Thanks so much!
AnneLine
I don't know if Cristo Rey still does it this way, but they have some where the images are machine embroidery (so they DON'T wash out!) and the edges are stitched around the outside so they don't ravel. Brilliant women! If you want to check with them: Carmelite Monastery of Cristo Rey 721 Parker Avenue San Francisco, CA 94118

The images have pretty much washed out, and the whole thing's pretty faded. Looking very worse for wear...I think it's about time I invest in a new one! Nihil Obstat
Here is the eBay store I purchased from. AnneLine
This is he closest one I could find to the one I have from Cristo Rey - except that the fabric sewn over the brown wool is white, and the embroidery and stitching around the edge are machine done in brown thread. (fancy zig zag.) It has OLMC on one face, and the Discalced Carmelite crest on the other. However... no guarantees that they will be using the same embroidery panels as this one was purchased a few years ago (the extra stitching means they REALLY last a long time!) I already have Brown Scapulars (25 of them, at my last count. Small and 100% felt. I believe I ordered them from the Divine Mercy Gift Shop and just gave a donation), but I'd definitely like something like what you've posted for my St. Joseph scapular. The only one I can find that looks exceptionally decent (plus it comes with a crucifix and medal) costs more than I would normally consider paying. I will look around and contact the Carmelites, and if I can't get one from them I'll resort to paying a bit extra If I order it while I'm in the States, it means the shipping costs won't be as high - which is great, because the amount I've paid on shipping for things is enough to drive a person round the twist! AnneLine
Oh... that's right --- you had the St. Joseph one. I'd figure out which religious community was behind those (wasn't it on the last scapular thread you posted?) and see if they have a 'lead' on a good source. If you are at all handy with a needle, you can stitch the edge yourself if you can't find one with it on there. I can send you a link to the embroidery stitch if you need one... It isn't hard, and they wear a LOT better. If it doesn't have a printed image (either woven or embroidered) the things are all but indestructible... and even if the picture gets faded or washed off, it is still valid, BTW.....
Thanks! It is Capuchin. I'm a keen sewer and was thinking of making my own scapulars at one point. Felt, cord and thread would be quite easy to come by. It seems as though it would be a fairly simple exercise. Plus making things always has more meaning for me I'll try and see if I can get one with embroidery. I think they look nicer anyhow Edited October 3, 2012 by Spem in alium
AnneLine
Here's that link to the blanket stitch -- you can use it to 'secure' the edge of any scapular... makes a HUGE difference in how they look and wear....
