College Major Choices And Job Security Realities.

Forget about what degree you graduate with. Worry about whether you know what you're doing or not, and whether you do it better than the next guy. If you do, you won't have a problem getting a job. If you don't, having the degree won't help you much. I've never been asked for a copy of my diploma. A lot of what you learn during your school years will be obsolete by the time you graduate anyway. In the real world you have to constantly adapt.

As it happens, I just graduated from the Mount in 2011 with a degree in biology. I have nothing but good things to say about the program, although it may be a little nuanced due to its size, but all programs have their quirks. I know of several students who went on to Sacred Heart for the dpt program, and even more who are now in graduate school (like myself), medical school, or have taken a job in biotech or allied health. We also have a very good joint nursing program with Johns Hopkins. All of the professors are really attentive, but one of the pitfalls of such a small class is that you must really excel to stand out in a group of 50 or so. Sure, a larger university might set you up with more opportunities if you'd like a job immediately afterwards, but I found that the Mount prepared me for my next step in academia, and when I wasnt studying my butt off or in the lab (which you will have ample opportunity to explore), I enjoyed my experience immensely too :D

Wow thank you for posting about your experience!! I need all the advice I can get at this point, and I really appreciate the point of view from an actual biology major. Never in a million years did I ever think I would actually take interest in a science major until this year, so I'm happy that I get to hear what's good about the Mount's biology program.
