carmenchristi
So I'm thinking about getting an iPhone 3g - second hand, but never used - off of craigslist. It's a good price ($150.) and unlocked so I can use it in Italy with my Italian SIM. Well... after being in the convent, I'm rather insecure about buying things. Is this a good investment? Or is the thing going to be a pain? I've tried to research but there is so much out there that it's hard to tell what to think! BTW... I DO need a new phone whatever the case, because I can't use internet on my old phone, and I will be needing that possibility in order to talk with my family via skype or google. THANKS! CatherineM
They can crash when they try to update to the new iOS. That's what happened when one of our wards got one. When I was looking online to try to figure out how to fix it, it seemed like lots of people had the same problem.
carmenchristi
Ok.... so if I just don't update it, is that ok?
Freedom
I have the 4S. I'm guessing if you do update it to the newest software make sure you sync your info such as apps, contacts onto your itunes because they will be lost. If you don't have a computer, then it's probably best to stay away from any updates. Easy phone to understand, not complicated like other smart phones. Battery life is not that great but here are a few things to help with that, keep the screen light on low, manually check your mail instead of it automatically checking it every so many minutes. Keep the Blue Tooth feature off unless of course you're using it Might be best to try & get a 1-3 month warranty if you can just to see if battery life is up to par and everything is working accordingly. Not sure if you can get that on CL. Might be best to get one on Amazon.com. If there is a way to get the i4, I would, SW updates can be done wirelessly and comes with with an iCloud app, meaning you do not have to sync anything to the computer, it does it all wirelessly. The phone is cheaper now that the i5 is out. Good battery life would need at least one full charge a day, possibly more if you use it a lot. May the Holy Angels guide you through this deal. God bless!
CatherineM
No idea. Maybe. Just remember that it will try to update when you connect to iTunes.

penguin31
If you purchase the 3G note that the most recent version of the iPhone software for that phone is 4.2, released in November 2010, and no future updates are expected. The 3GS is the oldest iPhone still supported with software updates from Apple. Further, many apps available for the iPhone only support, at minimum, the 3GS and later. (Some only support iPhone 4 and up, but that's a far smaller number). Taking a quick glance at eBay, you can buy an unlocked iPhone 3GS for almost the exact same price, and it's faster, is still supported by Apple, and has far more app support. Does this sound like the right course of action??? Sorry for sounding so stupid..,. but I am totally cell phone illiterate.

KnightofChrist
You could have jailbroken it and installed Skype that way. There's apps for that, some kinda close to being simple. But ol'well. It's probably better to get something else or a newer model.
