Not The Philosopher
So, I thought I'd start a thread for those of us [s]pretentious elitists[/s] who like classical music to talk about favourite composers/pieces/recordings, what we're listening to, make recommendations etc. Lately I've become endeared to the music for Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty ballet and Schubert's Mass in E flat (the Kyrie in particular is just gorgeous). *no, you're not allowed to make that smart alec comment about how "classical music" only existed between 1750 and 1820

Spem in alium
If we're including choral music, I love: Ensemble Organum (especially their Kyrie) The Tallis Scholars (esp. their rendition of Allegri's Miserere) The choir of Christ College, Cambridge (heard them live!) Thomas Tallis (especially...yes, Spem in alium! I think the Winchester Choir's rendition would have to be the best I've heard. I've not read "Fifty Shades of Grey", but apparently the author incorporates Spem in alium in some kind of weird erotic way. I don't really get that, but whatever floats your boat.) My father owns a lot of LPs, and we have a few choral albums. I don't know the names of them precisely, but I love listening to them. Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture is always a piece that sends me into bliss. Especially when the choral part is included... Basilisa Marie
ALL THE THINGS by Debussy. Also Wagner. But maybe that's because trying to play "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral" was a pain in the rear in high school.

And yeah, I'm using "classical music" here pretty widely: choral, opera, ballet, etc. are all up for grabs. But Spem in Alium in Fifty Shades of Grey? Yet another reason to not go there . Nihil Obstat
At the moment my favourites are these: Boccherini's Stabat Mater Pergolesi's Stabat Mater Anything I can get my hands on by Palestrina Vivaldi's Four Seasons, as well as his violin concertos. Lately I have also been on a bit of a traditional far east music kick. Specifically Mongolian folk and Chinese guzheng songs.
Sure is. I'm also getting into Byrd a little, but not that much. The Tallis Scholars are really, really great. I've not heard a lot of their stuff, but they give me chills! Yeah. I mostly listen to the music on Youtube, and the comments are all basically: "Like this if Fifty Shades of Grey brought you here". I'm always tempted to reply - "No! Exceptional music brought me here!"
