TheresaThoma
Just my two cents. Its not really my cup of tea, but I do know some really great devout Catholics who are part of the charismatic renewal. It can be a really beautiful element of the Church or it can go in some really bad directions. I would say approach it with a cautiously open mind. OnlySunshine
Honestly, I have no idea what to believe. I don't want to totally discredit the Holy Spirit and what He can do, but there are some things that I cannot get past. I attended a Healing service because my mom has been having a lot of health problems and there was a Eucharistic Procession. I was sharing the pew with another girl who I know from the Young Adult group. Once the Eucharist reached her, she fell over in a spell and started laughing. There was a lady in another aisle (who I didn't know) who fell over and started shaking when the Monstrance reached her. I'm not so sure about these "slain in the spirit" type of incidences. They seem kinda hokey to me. I just felt absolute peace when it went by me, but I've cried before while touching the humeral veil. Like I said, I don't want to discredit anything if it actually happened, but it's very difficult to ignore the strange incidents.

Mercy me
The closest that I have ever come to a gift of the Holy Spirit was when I was abroad and attended mass. I understood every word. Later was I told that it was not in English and did not believe it. I attended an audience with JP2 and the same thing happened. So, not exactly the typical definition of a Charismatic gift but certainly in line with the Biblical definition.
ThePenciledOne
From my experience, this is probably the worst place to ask, on the grounds that not many here are open to the Charismatic Renewal. Which is extremely tragic.
Brother Adam
People here are wrong in condemning it. The Holy Spirit makes them uncomfortable because they expect the Holy Spirit only to work in their biased, preconceived notion of what the Holy Spirit is and is not allowed to do. There have been plenty of abuses, some well meaning, others nefarious, in the renewal. It is a legitimate expression of our Catholic spirituality when done in fidelity to the Magisterium and under her explicit guidance.

I think fear is something that also builds into this feeling as well. People are very afraid from going out of their comfort zone, because obviously Christianity should never stir up 'anxiety' or being 'uncomfortable' as a part of Faith. To Jesus Through Mary
There was a period in my life a few years back I was going through something very painful. There was this priest that was known for his healing ministry. So I went to him and asked to speak with him. He prayed over me. And kept like pushing my head back. My eyes were closed and I was trying really hard to concentrating on praying, I wanted so badly healing from this certain thing. I was willing to try anything. But as he was pushing my head back, I just stood there and he was frustrated and I was just utterly confused with my neck starting to hurt. My friend later explained to me what was going on. I guess that was the point for me to be filled with the Holy Spirit. I look back and laugh. But guess it just didn't "take" on me.
the171
The Church is so amesome because we have so many different styles of prayer. Contemplation, music, meditation, Lectio Divina, etc. That isn't even getting into the different forms, uses, and rites of the mass! We are diverse. I think that is how Christ likes it. carmenchristi
I think it's silly how much some people argue about this. Anyway, I personally received a lot of good from the Charismatic Renewal when I was a kid. I was really involved, and was led to love my faith. I eventually grew out of it though, and don't have any desire to be involved anymore. I'd rather stay away. Many of my friends who were heavily involved as teenagers have left their faith entirely, others are good Catholics. So I believe that when it is a means to an end, it's great! When it leads you to be a better Catholic... avvesome. Things start falling apart when, as someone mentioned, it starts taking away from the catholicity of the Church and becomes an exclusive group. When people's faith is "Charismatic" instead of "Catholic" that is a BIG problem.
