That's one of those questions you just shouldn't ask here, isn't it?

we mods close threads only after the something terrible is made visible... preemptive strikes are wack.

Isn't dUST's post enough justification? :|

several years ago I read on usenet about someone that started speaking on tongues after Receiving the Eucharist... thing is, she had never heard of "speaking on tongues before", or any charismatic-ish stuff.

There is nothing inherently wrong about charismatic prayer. There IS a lot wrong when someone puts too much focus on "showy" gifts of the Spirit (speaking in tongues, etc), focus on the "Movement" instead of the Church, and a load of other things. The Holy Spirit will always lead us to a greater love of Christ and his Church. The Charismatic Renewal gets a really bad rep because a LOT of people have gone in all sorts of very not orthodox and downright strange directions in the name of the Charismatic Renewal. The people I know who have a more "charismatic" spirituality and are "doing it right" are absolutely the most orthodox people I have ever met, and have an astounding love and devotion to the Church. Sadly, most of the time those who are the most vocal about the Charismatic Renewal (edit: as in, "pro" charismatic stuff) aren't in the orthodoxy category. It's a super touchy subject because it not only deals with something that people take very personally, but also because people have done super wack things in the name of it.

Does that help at all? Or at least explain why it's kind of a forbidden topic around here?

Just my own personal experience here. I went to a Catholic high school, so obviously there were a fair amount of people who were actually practicing Catholics. Still not many, but some. Of them, there was a sub-group who all went to the stuff at one parish that revolved a lot around both the Lifeteen program and broadly charismatic 'events'. Of all the people I knew of who were really into that scene, every single one of them has since left the faith, either for non-denominational Christianity, or atheism.

Presumably (hopefully) there must be a couple around whom I did not know of who stayed Catholic, but of the ones I was aware of, literally zero of them remain Catholic three years down the road.

So take that for what it is worth. I will say no more on the subject.
