In other words, I find it interesting that he get's quoted so often in conservative circles given that being a socialist is now basically seen as a moral failing on the American right. :winner:

The Spanish war and other events in 1936-37 turned the scale and thereafter I knew where I stood. Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it. It seems to me nonsense, in a period like our own, to think that one can avoid writing of such subjects. Everyone writes of them in one guise or another. It is simply a question of which side one takes and what approach one follows. And the more one is conscious of one's political bias, the more chance one has of acting politically without sacrificing one's aesthetic and intellectual integrity.

A stopped clock is right twice a day, and if the stopped clock is vehemently against tyranny then it might even be right more than twice. ^_^

Orwell is overrated. Huxley was much closer to the mark.

This may be true, but I think Orwell was a better writer.

Has there ever been a democratic socialist state that consulted every person who would be subject to its rule and then did not attempt to rule those who did not consent?

The Kibbutz systems in Israel, the free territories in Ukraine, Catalone Spain in the revolutionary years (maybe)? I don't know. Why?

Because otherwise, it's tyranny.

Left socialism (which is lower case democratic socialism) has always advocated the abolition of the state. Democratic Socialists (the political parties) tend to be left socialists in their normative outlook but accept the use of the Democratic Socialist party to make the state and capitalism more humane while they work towards the ultimate abolition of the state and capitalism.
