Going On A Come And See Retreat.

So, I've always been having the discernment-debate between religious priesthood and diocesan priesthood.

As some of you know, in my last thread on VS, I said i was going to apply with my diocese. I still plan on pursuing this.

But, I cant--and shouldnt--fully commit to the diocese until I fully discern away from religious life. So I am going on a come and see retreat with my favorite religious order, the Congregation of Holy Cross in South Bend, Indiana. I'm taking the retreat to truly listen to God, and make sure that my diocese is where He calls me to. Right now I am sure it is.

Please pray for me, so that I may set aside all of my fears and expectations, and just fully hear God's voice.

I am flying down on Thursday and will be back Sunday night. I will update you guys when I get back.

Thanks Pham!

I'm praying for you!! I LOVE the congregation of Holy Cross, such wonderful men and Joyful priests. I know some of the seminarians that just started theology at Moreau Seminary, and they are fantastic. I pray that you have an open mind and heart to what God is calling you to, He will lead you to where you need to be if it is within your Diocese or a religious order.

God bless, and good luck on our Journey!!

Great things are happening in the Congregation. I know it will be a blessing, and I hope it will be an experience of clarity. God bless you!

South Bend Indiana? Dude, this is simply a sign that we are both called to the Religious Priesthood! Being in different States and yet being attracted to Orders in the same State is too convenient. Either that or you are called to my diocese and we are called to serve it together. Either or. :hehe:

Or you are just paranoid.

God willing, when we become priests, we will be brother priests, and no amount of land between us can change that...

True, but we still need to be serving as diocesan Priests in the same diocese or something. It just won't be the same if we can't spend our days off together (Which apparently are Thursdays for Priests) in our cassocks. Imagine: We order pizza and the pizza guy comes to the door. What's the first thing he sees? Our cassocks. We go to the store. What's the first thing people see? Cassocks. We go to a Catholic book store to buy more cassocks. What do they see? I think you get my point...

When I'm a priest, I will definitely not buy my cassocks in a book store...

Nola Seminarian

big jon and future priest calm down dudes, yall arent even in seminary yet and yall are making plans for after your prospective ordinations. guys just calm down and let the Holy Spirit do what He wills. i only say this because this is a vice amongst seminarians that we tend to assume our ordimations are guarenteed, and when you have an attitude like this it is bad because no one needs arrogant priests who dont listen to God for guidance but only to themselves

You are right that ordination is not "guaranteed" but IMHO I think that it is possible to be confident about one's vocation while also staying humble and trusting in God's will...

That is the whole point of going on a discernment retreat in the first place. :)

Nola Seminarian

i dont think we should be so much confident in our vocations as much as we should be trying more and more to be open to God's will

Catholic book stores don't just sell books. They sell statues, Rosaries and other things like that, and they usually have a room dedicated to liturgical clothing and cassocks.

I am back! I guess I should probably give you guys an update on what the weekend was like.

I was visiting the Old College, which is the Undergraduate Seminary for the Congregation of Holy Cross on the campus of Notre Dame.

It was a pretty amazing weekend, and I have a lot to reflect on. I got a chance to hang out with some great guys, and see the truly Catholic side of Notre Dame.

The seminarians were very welcoming, and there brotherhood with one another was very obvious.

When I got there, I went to a Philosophy class with my host at Notre Dame. I had expected myself to be totally lost, but surprisingly, I followed along on a few things. After we went to their community Mass at Moreau Seminary which is the Congregation's Graduate Seminary. It's about a ten minute walk from Old College.

One of the first 'Most Amesome Moments' of the visit was that Mass with the whole community and the later Lucernarium, which is a form of night prayer.

The second "MAM" was saying Morning Prayer with the guys from Old College in the "Log Chapel", which is a reconstruction of one of the first buildings on campus.

It was in this Chapel, that during a Mass/Morning Prayer/Holy-Hour extravaganza that I think I received the answer that I was looking for over the weekend. But I need to reflect on this some more, before I can make my decision. Therefore I will not yet announce what the answer that I may have received was.

The other MAM was at 12 Midnight on Saturday night. When most college-age guys would be partying or sleeping, these guys had a better idea. "Hey, let's go say a rosary at the Grotto!" And so we did, a rosary at the replica Grotto of Lourdes on campus. It's was amesome.

All in all, it was a great weekend. I have developed an intense love for the Congregation, and will always be a fan even if I don't join them. They are definitely a great and holy bunch of "men with hope to bring."

(All of the pictures are from their Vocations website: http://vocation.nd.edu/ )

Thank you for all of the prayers!!
