Egidio
AVE MARIA! While it may be true that modern forms of music have their place, it cannot be denied, that Gregorian is by far one of the most beautiful forms of music ever created! (in particular for the liturgy cf. SC 16; Tra le sollecitudini - Pope St Pius X; and others!!) I came across this Power Point presentation which gives an excellent introduction to Gregorian, and is not afraid to get into some of the technicalities. So for those who ever wondered what all those squares were doing of staff lines, you can find out if you follow this link . carmenchristi
This is a really good resource! Thanks for sharing! BTW do you know of something similar that explains how to sing a Gospel? Around here they just invent the melody as they go along. I would feel bad saying "Excuse me Mr. Deacon, but can I teach you how to sing a gospel?" but on the other hand, it would be harmless to send a link

I have always heard the "ferial tone" used when the gospel is sung in english, but I don't believe it has to be the case. You can find the ferial and solemn tones in the ' Liber Usualis', downloadable from here http://www.sanctamissa.org/en/music/gregorian-chant/choir/liber-usualis-1961.html However i believe that this edition has the instructions in latin. If you can get hold of a 1963 edition, they have all the instructions in english. Bishop Peter J. Elliott published a book " Ceremonies of the Modern Roman Rite". which is an excellent resource for the Ordinary form of the Mass, although it is certainly neither difinitive nor exhaustive. Happy singing! AVE MARIA!
