brianthephysicist
I found this in my inbox on Thursday. It was sent to the email list of all physics and astronomy grad students by the graduate director of physics (1 person below head of the department). Subject: looking for female volunteers to have lunch in the Simons center with #$%&!@%$ Female grads, #$%&!@%$, director of diversity of the APS is visiting us on Friday and I am looking for volunteers to have lunch with him on Friday in the Simons center about 1-2 pm. Please let me know today if you can do this. Thanks, J
beatitude
Err, yes, creepy and sexist. At least it didn't stipulate how short their skirts have to be for the occasion.
homeschoolmom
The only thing I can think of (beyond the obvious creep factor).... Maybe he's trying to gather some feedback regarding being a female physics/astronomy grad student (seeing as he's the director of diversity) and they are trying to get a little group together for that. But, um, yeah... it looks like an escort-type situation the way it's proposed here.
Winchester
Wouldn't it have gone to the cheerleading squad, then?
MissyP89
I'm with HSM ... probably trying to get a diverse group together. But ... yeah. Not the smartest way to word it.

Slappo
It could be they had so many open seats for guys and so many open seats for girls and all the guy seats are taken? Definitely sounds creepy though...
AnneLine
It does feel creepy... but I bet that it really is just.... inept. Maybe they have a 'female in the sciences' scholarship or something... but brother (or sister) there must be a better way of wording it! Anomaly
Come on. It's from the head of the Physics department. How much social skills can a friend of Sheldon have?

4588686
There's no less sexy quality in a woman than brains. I don't really believe that. But I thrive on negative attention.
Groo the Wanderer
director of diversity? what a crock. how about just accepting the best folks there are and quit looking at the special things that make us all different

Ed Normile
Well, maybe with the economy in the shape it is they could not afford an escort service. You never know, maybe they want to study how fast a young womans hand can travel through space to slap the face of the diversity director due to an improper advance, would not fall under physics. ed
TheresaThoma
That is a very poorly worded email. Context as always is everything, one line such as "I have heard back from any of the ladies in the department and would love to have some of them there to share their opinionsetc, therefore..." or "we have a great scholarship/opportunity coming up for the women of the department and would love if a few of the ladies could come to a lunch where we will be formally announcing it" This as a female physicist would make me MUCH more likely and excited to go. Right now it definitely sounds creepy.
