Julie de Sales
Thanks for the answers, I didn’t thought that nowadays there are some Poor Clares that try to observe the Rule, even the most difficult prescriptions. I asked this question because the sisters I visited (Urbanist Poor Clares) eat meat, sleep in a normal bed, do not rise at midnight and can speack at the parlour in private. There are a lot of mitigations and I wondered if now this is the rule…I’m glad that some branches follow the footsteps of St Clare regarding the austerity and I will try to find out more about St Colette.
Your very welcome! I remember you saying that you were visiting some Urbanist Poor Clares. Of course not all Urbanist Poor Clares have so many mitigations (I like this word better than lax-I am sorry for using that word earlier concerning these nuns.) Like Chiquitunga said, the PCs of the Immaculate are pretty rigorous in their observance and they are fully (or partially) Urbanist. Of course, Clares who follow a very mitigated rule of life are not bad or any less daughters of Saint Clare, but I would guess there may be some joy lacking in those communities, as observant PCs are known for their penance and their joy, and these two are inextricably intertwined for the nuns. However, when St Colette was reforming the Franciscan Order to its primitive fervor and observance, she did not look down on the Urbanist Poor Clares or any of the Franciscans who live a more comfortable life than that of Holy Father Saint Francis and Holy Mother Saint Clare. I recommend Walled In Light, which is a great bio (reads like a novel) of St Colette by Mother M Francis. I was pleased when I read it and found that when St Colette was put in charge of a house of mitigated Poor Clares, she would never force these nuns to observe the original disciplines of the Rule. She would simply teach the original way of life to new postulants, and her sweetness and loving-kindness eventually won most of these Urbanist Poor Clares over to her reform anyway. You could probably find 'Colettine' Poor Clares who do not follow the way of life as strictly as they should, so it is not like one group or branch is good and one is bad or anything like that..In the end this just means we poor discerners have to do a lot of research, but it keeps us on our game! [/background]
Yes, I have never seen an OSC community go barefoot either. But yes, besides that, the St. Louis OSCs seem to follow everything else, like rising at midnight. Also these OSCs founded from Boston in Japan seem very much like the Colettines too, http://poorclare.org/japan/ I'm with you Emma .. if I was to go Poor Clare, I'd go straight for the Colettines!! (if that were God's will of course) I love how they call St. Colette their Holy Mother also. And I love St. Colette, period. She had a long struggle until she knew what God wanted from her .. and she was a recluse! In Rockford I learned also from Mother Dominica that there was a Colettine community in Avila when St. Teresa was founding her first monastery (San Jose) and she drew a lot of inspiration from them (she also had a vision of St. Clare, which I used to have a holy card of!!) Mother also told me St. Teresa wanted barefeet like them but wasn't granted it. I had never heard that one before. I will have to look it up, but I trust Mother Dominica's knowledge .. pretty neat! About the Poor Sisters of St. Clare, yes you would still call them Sisters as they are not technically Nuns yet, as they would have to be officially in the Order and profess Solemn Vows. They are not a religious institute at this point but a Public Association of the Faithful, so their vows are private and not public as religious vows are, as posted about here. Not to say anything against them! Please forgive me! Just stating the facts. Many religious communities in the history of the Church took a long time to be finally official, etc. and were full of saints already (like St. Clare of Montefalco's community for instance .. or even Sts Francis & Clare themselves!!) Another strict Poor Clare observance are the Poor Clares of the Immaculate. I don't know their history by heart, but their (four I think) monasteries in Italy were Poor Clare monasteries before (I think OSC.. Urbanists I remember hearing, not sure what that is) and then they became PCs of the Immaculate - Clarisse dell'Immacolata. I don't know all that much about them, but I did notice they have double grilles in their video Love this soo much!
I LOVE the PCs of the Immaculate! If they were closer to me, I really would have had to give them a look (a very long and hard look!) Yes, the Colettines are wonderful! I am realizing more and more that the different branches and reforms of every order (except the Carthusians of course!) each take on not only different disciplines and focuses on certain aspects of the charism but also just different personalities. I love both the Colettines rigorous penance and also that unique joy that is particular to themselves. Not to say they are the only joyful Sisters, but each community/branch manifests their joy in a unique way. That is so interesting about Saint Teresa of Avila! The Discalced Carmelites and the strict PCs are like sisters in many ways! In fact, one of the portresses at the Monastery I am joining has a sister who is in Carmel, I am guessing Discalced. They are different, of course, but similar enough to where many discern both..I know I did! Like I said in the previous paragraph, the Carmelites just have a 'feeling' that is all their own, as do the PCCs. For that matter, I think it is so true that you are not called to 'Carmel' or to be a 'Poor Clare' in general but there is a call to a specific community..and of course each community has its own 'vibe' as well! I went to the Japan PC website, and ohmygoodness I LOVED the articles on how the PC life merges with the Japanese culture. I learned a lot from reading a little... I love that!
Emmaberry, that's wonderful!!!!!! emmaberry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0z4sU1QefM A tape I bought at the Monastery. It is Mother Francis' address to the Secular Franciscans in honor of the 800th anniversary of Holy Father Saint Francis and the founding of the Seraphic Franciscan Order. Her voice is very unique, even among nuns I have not heard a similar voice-very delicate. VeniJesuAmorMi
Many prayers for you Emmaberry! This is such an exciting time. I really enjoy the information and pictures on this thread. I found it really interesting about St. Teresa of Avila and the barefeet! I also never heard that before, but it is great to know about. The Portress asked her name then said, "How fitting since this is the Year of Faith! ...This next year will be our Year of Emma!" (Feel free to 'guess' my little sister's name.) I told her that I hope I will persevere to the completion of this ‘Year of Emma.’ We joked that perhaps the 'Year' will turn into years, then decades, and so on.
It shows such a wonderful sweetness.... Edit: And I really like the name Sr. Mary Christiana. Not that that has to do with the rest of the post, but the name is at the end of the post above mine. They go barefoot, but if it's too cold, they wear socks. Like you said before about meat, it fits perfectly with Francis's poverty that they eat any food that is donated. Since they don't buy anything themselves, it might be kind of rude to accept some donations but not others when they rely on their neighbors' generosity. I don't think they can accept monetary donations which people know, but that's different from turning away someone who went to all the effort of grilling meat for them. And actually, the rule doesn't say anything about meat. The only things I'm not sure about is if they have other sisters listening when one is speaking in the parlor. They do have curtains on their grilles, but they pulled it back when they spoke with me. I don't know that they have it closed for family visits either, maybe they do. I think they follow pretty much everything in Clare's Rule except her advice on the bolts on the cloister door or chapel grille.

emmaberry
My 'quoting' is not working! I will reply to the posts-I am so sorry if it is confusing not being able to read the user's original posts! Christina Therese: Yes, Christiana is a beautiful name! Apparently, it is sought after in the Poor Clares, because I have seen a lot of PC Sisters from all over with 'Christiana' in their name. It is lovely, and I like how you incorporated it into your username. Yes, what the Portress said was very sweet-I was actually taken aback by it, and glad that we were having the conversation over the phone so she couldn't see my expression. I thought perseverance in the community you are about to enter was off-limits for conversation. Glad this is not the case! I have a feeling any communities who refuse to talk about the possibility of staying or leaving are probably pretty cold if you do in fact leave. Also, it may have something to do with the amount of girls the Roswell Poor Clares has seen come through its doors. In 75, Dear Mistress was saying it was their 'baby boom.' They had 16 postulants! That is up there with the beautiful and highly popular Dominican Sisters. There are plenty of cons to a large community versus a smaller one, but one definite pro is that the leaving process is usually more comfortable, or so I've heard. I am sure some people in large communities have been treated poorly when they decided to leave, though, so it's not a hard and fast rule. Pax: I was hoping you would see this and reply! I really liked what you said in the other thread, though I knew it was from 6 months ago when you weren't applying to your Sisters (!) so I hoped you'd be back and possibly have more to say! I am sure you learn more about your Sisters every time you visit and even more so as you take the different steps toward entrance-I know I am learning more every day. Pix from a PCC booklet I scanned (okay, so it's a picture of a picture... surprise! ): <--Dear Mistress I am wondering at what point I should begin clearing out my room. I am going to keep essentials and some other things I would like to have should I leave, but I needed to have a 'make way' day (as Mother Francis termed the throw-out-all-unnecessary-clutter days in the Monastery) anyways. In my (comparatively!) short time on VS reading other's countdown threads, it seems they often wait until the last minute to get rid of clutter and other mundane things of that sort before entering. It may be wise to wait I would post these uninteresting thoughts on the blog, but I don't want it to be about me. Ideally, I'd post enough substantive stuff on the Poor Clares that when I leave, hopefully some girl(s) come across it and consider a contemplative, possibly PCC, vocation. I would also like it to be less about me and more about the beauty of the life because Mother requested that I 'spread the word'! I don't think a blog is what she had in mind, but I am sure everyone can identify with not feeling like you can do as much as you would like to help your Sisters, so when they give you anything to do for them, it is so exciting that we might tend to go overboard. Also (if anyone is still reading!) I think I am going to run one last marathon with my dad before entering. The problem is that these things require a good 50+ hours of training, and I don't know when I would do that. I don't think the Missionaries of Charity are going to let me take 'running breaks'! My parent's kind of forbid me from running by myself in a random Dallas neighborhood, so that's definitely not going to happen. My dad and I usually 'run for a cause' and raise money for this cause. I asked Mother if we could raise money for the Monastery and she said that is allowed, but we have to handle all the finances in a fundraising situation. I didn't understand this-aren't they a 501c3? The internet says they are. Do you think this might be a Franciscan thing, where they cannot handle money at all, but we can give it to them? Although that still doesn't make sense, because there's no 'handling' of the money taking place..it would just be accepting donation, which will probably all be from my parish, because none of my non-Catholic circle is going to donate to the 'evil nuns'.
According to one book I read on St. Clare, Francis used to call Clare "Christiana" so that might have something to do with it. I've been busy and wanted to go back and reread the Rule before I posted, so there you go! Must run to class now!
VeniJesuAmorMi
the dog! Oh, I also set up a blog. It has nothing on it, yet, so don't rush over there all at once. http://entitledtopoverty.blogspot.com/
Awww! That picture with the dog is so sweet. Its the same kind of dog that we have. We have two: Tinkerbell is a mini so she's really tiny and a little princess (spoiled little thing.) Then there's Captain Jack; he's sweet too. ... The dog that they have at the monastery that I was in was really spoiled. Everyone just loved her. I could imagine that its the same way with all communites that have pets. Great blog too! The way its set up is beautiful.
andibc
I would also like it to be less about me and more about the beauty of the life because Mother requested that I 'spread the word'!
I'm quite sure this is not on your list of things to do and might even seem repulsive at first, but would you consider vlogging the last part of your discernment journey? I'm sure you're familiar with "New Catholic Generation" vloggers. Many of them are just beginning the discernment process. If you don't have the interest in video taping yourself and figuring out youtube (or maybe you are already there and I'm not making the connection) I know of a few NCG vloggers who would likely be interested in interviewing you...maybe on skype or some other way. It would help get the word out about PCC and help NCG goal of following the Pope's call to use technology to evangelize.
