Female Priests?

Today I was in my Theologies of Gender class. We were talking about cultural perceptions of gender, and this girl mentioned that she was part of a "Roman Catholic Female Priest" community.

This may be very naive and ignorant of me, but I had no idea such groups existed. Does anyone know anything about these kinds of communities? Are they very common? Apparently there is a large community of "female priests" near here, and the women get ordained over water because water is not considered part of a diocese. It all seems very bizarre to me, not to mention wrong.

Inform her that she is goofy as [the word formerly filtered to floopy] and is by no stretch of the imagination a priest.
Also tell her that woman is not supposed to have a y anywhere in it.

Here we go ...

First of all ... she can't be part of a Roman Catholic Women Priest community that is truly Roman Catholic. By participation in an invalid and illicit ceremony such as ordaining a woman (which is NOT allowed in the Roman Catholic church) they are excommunicated.

She is incorrectly referring to herself as Roman Catholic. But then again the Womenpriest's group does that.

And yes their ordinations occur usually on a boat. That I did read. The ordinations (from what I understood) have been done by Roman Catholic retired Bishops (who, by their actions, excommunicated themselves anyway, so the line of succession was broken).

I agree with USAirwaysIHS. Goofy, goofy doesn't even begin to describe it. Besides -- I also have a feeling that you're at a very liberal school. Part of the reason why I stopped doing a Masters in Theology program was the liberalness of the school I was at ... it was very feminist.

Thanks everyone. It seemed crazy to me when she said it.

I don't really understand why she would call herself a Roman Catholic if - and she said this herself - she is "out of communion with the Vatican". It sounds super goofy - beyond that, even.
So, do they think that women can actually perform Mass? Is that what they do? How do these kinds of communities even start?

I'm at a liberal arts school. It identifies as Catholic Benedictine, but some of the views expressed and some of what goes on here are far from Catholic.

Just be careful what you say to her, or you'll face harassment charges. It's a bit like calling yourself a vegetarian but still eating steaks every day.

Even though I like my prof, I don't really agree with what she said in response to this girl. She made a mention of how female "priests" are not in communion with the Vatican, that they "didn't agree with the hierarchy" and "found a way to get around it". She almost made it sound like it was a good thing to be happening (She is a feminist and a Lutheran, just as a heads up).

And it was funny, immediately after this girl spoke about how great being a "woman priest" is, another girl started talking about how she's from "the most conservative diocese in the United States"...in quite a combative tone. Made me ROFL...inside.

Is this perhaps the Lincoln Diocese? If so, that diocese is about as conservative as you can be while still being in union with Rome. It is the only diocese in the United States that absolutely forbids female altar servers, and it is home to one of the only two FSSP seminaries in the entire world. If you don't know who the FSSP are, you would probably mistake them for the SSPX at first. They're a great group of Priests who do the Latin Mass but are in union with Rome and love the Pope. Their other seminary is in Germany, if you are curious.

This is not to make a fight about them and the no female altar servers and what-not, I'm just saying if she said "Lincoln diocese" she was spot on.

Umm... wait a sec... if she is a Lutheran then where is the problem? And why is she claiming to be a Catholic?

Sorry for the confusion - I am talking about my professor there. A student was claiming to be a priest.

I have no idea. She didn't actually mention her diocese by name. But she did say something about her church not allowing female altar servers, and I think she also mentioned that women aren't permitted to give the readings either.

Tell her she needs to put Catholic in quotes. i.e. "Catholic"
[/quote]

..And that she needs to use air-quotes when she describes herself as such ;)
