arfink
So apparently square watermelons are the thing in Japan. They grow them in these neat acrylic boxes (which I imagine are laser cut, just because I like to imagine such things) Then they put the watermelon in the laser too. How fancy. I bet they taste the same as other watermelons, and just cost more. But dang, they look cool!
AnneLine
They look like candles made of jade, frankly. They are pretty cool!
AnneLine
The square watermelons got me thinking about how the Victorians got cucumbers to grow straight.... in glass tubes, of course... Are your cucumbers straight? The Victorian age was prolific in its inventiveness, but there are times to modern eyes when you just have to wonder "Why?". For instance, the Victorians were such perfectionists that they invented glass tubes to go over their cucumbers to make them grow straight...Now that really is taking uniformity to the extreme! (But then, when you next take a glance in a supermarket vegetable aisle, at all the "perfect" produce-are we that different really?) Are your cucumbers straight? http://lostgardensofheligan.blogspot.com/2011/07/are-your-cucumbers-straight.html Edited January 25, 2013 by AnneLine

I mean a normal watermelon always takes up so much room in the fridge and since space is at a premium there... But that is awesome. I wanna try this with squashes!
