Chrysophylax
Hey, ARFink, I have an idea to take the taste of cold meetings from your mouth. You talked on a different thread about the quality of light in Minnesota during the winter. Can you figure out a way to draw that? I can't visualize it and it sounds interesting..... THAT might warm your artistic soul....
Light in Minnesota in Winter: 6 AM- "It is so dark out! AUGH, I tripped on a snow bank and face planted on the asphalt and now have road salt up my nose! Curse you stupid dark mornings!!"
AnneLine
Chrysophylax!!!! I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing at the image of the 'sunny Minnesota day' you are painting!!! People want to know about Sunny California, and I have to tell them that 'sunny August in California' near me looks like this (I actually LIVE on that hill... the one BURIED in the fog.): And that being it in looks like this: Which is pretty and romantic... except it is cold and wet... and imagine walking down a road without sidewalks at just after sunrise (or sunset) or God forbit at night.... in that: No way to know if any vehicle (or person) is coming from behind or in front of you... glare of a headlight could be a car, a bus, a truck..... but who knows where it is! Yeah... .romantic art is one thing, ARFINK; Chrys and are looking at this with the walkers' realisim... Chrysophylax
Wow, the mist is kinda cool, actually! We don't get a ton of mist or fog here. Usually it is clear, but cold (in the winter). I think what Arf was trying to get at about the lighting in winter in Minnesota is the way the sun just shines like you would not believe on any day when it is not clouded over(or at least not completely clouded over). When it is winter and the snow is on the ground, the light is reflected off the snow and is so bright! (Most people have to wear sunglasses when driving in the winter.) It often seems kinda magical, too, because often the sky is still gray-ish, but the ground is just shining and sparkling. Especially after new snowfall, it is so beautiful, and so still and peaceful. New falling snow is so amazing and it sparkles so much! Sledding in the evening, you look up and see a darkening navy-blueish sky, and then look down and the ground is just like silver glitter! Or during the day when the snow falls and everything you see is white. It just gives a sense of stillness. I wonder if I can find a picture..... Here, found one. It is from a number of years ago, probably taken about 7 or 8ish in the morning, and is of the tree in our front yard after a heavy snowfall. You don't get the whole brightness effect because it is still fairly dark at that time but you get the snowfall effect on the atmosphere. Can't quite see the sparkle though... Chrysophylax
Hee Hee, looking at that picture again, I can tell a few things I missed. It is obviously one of the first snow falls because there are not snowbanks reaching all the way up to the bird feeder. I also forgot to mention that you only really think about the lovely atmosphere and lighting when you are inside looking out (usually). If you have to shovel or are outside for any reason, you might not think the same way! Also, if you were to walk under that tree right in that picture you would probably end up with a ton of snow down your back. haha
AnneLine
I totally get what you are saying Chrys. It is kind of like how PRETTY the fog is... till you have to go out in it. Here are some more photos & videos, and some thoughts: FOG always reminds me of God... feels like the Holy Spirit.... Powerful, beautiful, and sometimes scary. This is EVERYONE's favorite fog video: # Time lapse Fog rolling over a hill in San Francisco -- that's the local TV tower it is HUGE... you can make a guess from the photo below: Here's roughtly the same picture without the fog:

AnneLine
LAST One -- when it gets windy up here, it really blows. There are usually a few homes that lose roofs in the complex each year. And trees uprooted. Yup. And TRULY you don't want to be walking it it... Which brings me to the final video.... hurricaine force winds that came in while SOMEONE was taking a HIKE (yes it really does come in this fast!) Might have been blue sky shirt-sleeve weather earlier in the day.... Note how the grasses and plants are blowing!!!!. Again, NOT time lapse.... (I really posted them for Chrys who seemed intrigued by the fog.... but I bet all of you will enjoy them.) Minnesota phots look breathtaking! Good luck on the job apps! Let me know if I can help! I'm probably gonna be up late making cover letters. I really am not 100% sure what I'm doing. I've done a ton of these things, but either I'm just not lucky at all or maybe I'm doing it wrong. arfink
So apparently this is really happening: http://io9.com/5963263/how-nasa-will-build-its-very-first-warp-drive This is apparently what their benchtop model looks like: It's supposed to be able to produce less than a newton of thrust. Or something like that. Well, at least itw won't warp off the workbench...
