Oh yeah, something like that would be fun to do. I did a Franciscan coat of arms thing for a friend who is a secular Franciscan not too long ago.

AND... maybe parish or diocesan logos for YOUTH and YA Groups?????? THOSE probably would be POPULAR!!! Target some of the youth and YA and Relig Ed congresses...(must be someone on PM who could be your rep.....) Offer them to someone for the PhatMass store....

Oooooh... high schools? Colleges? this could be worth some $$$$ ARFink....

As far as the Orders... here are a few to start....

All this talk of FP and his little phatmass harem is making me sick. I think I'll stick to my own thread for a little while.

In other news, I had fresh pomegranate for lunch, as well as one of those silly hot-dog-wrapped-in-croissant-dough things, which was quite delish.

Did you see this from the Random Images thread? I loved it (thank you Spem!)

People have been asking me for a while now when I'll do pieces in metal. Well, i have found my casting method of choice at this point, and the new question is, what kind of foam will I use?

That website is all in German, but it gives the general idea. Basically, to make a metal object one first makes a foam positive. Then, a solid styrofoam sprue is attached with ordinary white glue, and the part is buried in fine quartz sand. The sand has no additives, is not wet, and is in no way remarkable at all. The sprue sticks up from the sand, and the molten metal, aluminum in this case, is poured right on top of the exposed styrofoam. The foam is eaten out and replaced by the hot metal, producing a perfect casting. I am not totally sure how this can be, but it obviously does work!

The best existing theory is that the foam, being mostly air by composition, is able to melt away and escape through the molten metal without disturbing the sand at all, mostly by virtue of it's volume decreasing very rapidly. Supposedly this is also possible with certain kinds of wax, but I have not seen it done with wax before.

My problem will be finding a foam I can cut with the laser. Styrofoam can be cut with the laser, but surface details and engraving would not really be possible because of the dramatic loss in volume when heated by the laser. The vaporised foam is hot enough that its own hot vapors will melt away more foam, making accurate engraving extremely tricky to achieve. Besides this, the production of large amount of polystyrene vapors is oppressively stinky, and basically toxic. Not something I want to try with the laser.

One possibility I have thought of is to see about an intermediate casting step, with a solid acrylic mold which can have a foam positive cast into it. A very intriguing engineering puzzle is this. :)

Not sure if it is relevant, but there is a LONG explanation about how bronze is made by the 'lost wax' method that sounds a whole lot like this. Irving Stone explains it in EXCRUCIATING detail (to me a non-artist) in The Agony and the Ecstasy. Probably you can find stuff on line.

Be sure you have good ventilation while doing your experiments.... please!

Ohhhhh yes. Actually, I have a couple pictures I need to take, to show how important that is. Today I had to move the laser cart out of the workshop so my dad could use it (which is a once or twice a year thing) and I pulled the ventilation ducting off the exhaust fan. Oh boy, the crud in there! I am so glad that croutons is in there and not in my lungs.

I should clarify: no materials of unknown composition, with the possible exception of a rock my mom found in the garden, have been used in the laser. I always check the MSDS first to make sure burning it won't kill me, and I always use proper ventilation.

I miss the autumn leaves, they're the best thing about trees. So I made my own today.

^^^ Wasn't there at one point an 'under 18' board...???

There are moments... when I wish that some threads could be moved to one of those....

Today's drawing is some alien spaceship concept art. I think my nebula turned out better than the craft did. :hehe:

I know this is probably pretty typical looking. I always found it very interesting that in sci-fi the space craft are largely aerodynamic. This is strange, because there is no air in space, and so spacecraft should really not need to look like air-breathing craft. But then, what should they look like? I like to think that humans would have a status-quo bias towards craft shaped like this in the future, but an alien race might have no such design sensibilities. A very fascinating question IMO.

Exciting news! I have another job prospect. It's a contract illustration job, but it sounds like the client is interested in a long-term working relationship. This could be interesting. I can't say anything more about the job at all right now, except I am really quite excited. :)
