Byzantine
I feel like some of the sins I used to commit might have been more... buried, I guess, than rooted out. Now the temptations to commit them are coming back. Not pleasant. Any advice for rooting out said temptations? Thanks!

Egidio
As i am sure you realize, temptations are not the same as sins. Sometimes, as our spiritual life progresses, there are times when all is calm, and the sailing is easy, but at other times the sea becomes turbulant with temptations, and it might seem that we will inevitably fall into sin! There are several reasons why the temptations may return. It may be because we have grown lax, and our vigilance to avoid certain dangerous occasions is less than it should be; or it may be that God wish's to test us, and to give us the opportunity to grow in virtue. Sometimes, when the temptations are related to memories of sins from a 'past life', these temptations can become a means by which we can offer up reparation for the past sin, by the suffering that these tempations cause. In any case, we can be sure that there will always be sufficient grace to keep us from falling into sin, we just have to accept and cooperate with that grace. If there are particular sins of the past which are now causing you to be troubled by temptation, you can always renew your sorrow for them in the confessional, (recogniseing however that if you have already confessed them, then they are already forgiven). This renewal of sorrow is pleasing to God and draws down grace. Of course, scrupulosity is to be avoided, but a good confessor and/or SD can help you avoid that pitfall. I will pray for you during this trial. Take comfort however that you are not alone, and many of the great saints went through similar trials; sometimes it is just part of the journey to holiness AVE MARIA!! Thijs
1. First thing that you shouldthinkis? Why is this thing keep on coming back? Where you in a desperate situation,is it on the time that you are angry, desperate, hurt, or are you in situation when you get envious that some are doing it and you're not? 2. Keep away from those distractive thoughts and keep yourself busy. 3. Consult a spiritual director or someone who has experience the same thing that you did and overcome.. 4. keep on praying. it will pass

[/quote] Let's say you worked hard on your yard to get rid of all the crabgrass and weeds, kept it mowed neat and green all summer, yet the next spring you find some of that pesky crabgrass starting to grow back. I'd say just do whatever got rid of it the previous year.
cmaD2006
daily examen would be on the top of the list ... and actually just focus on that one particular area of sin, looking at what the temptations were and how you reacted to it. Did you fall? Did you get close? Did you just see the temptation as if a gnat was bothering you and you successfully shooed it away?
PhuturePriest
I'm not sure if thinking about the temptations is a good idea. Whenever I was tempted I went along with the temptation because I thought about it. My method that worked was ignoring it. Pray, work, even playing a video game to get your mind off it helps. As for it being rooted, I am not sure what the particular sin is, but it could just be that you are young and your hormones are going off like fireworks. In this case they wouldn't be so much rooted, just your hormones changing again.
