Maronite Church

Hi everyone:

I just posted a few questions in the Q&A about the Maronite Church. I'm curious -- who on here attends a Maronite Church, and can you fill me in on some of the differences?

A new Spanish Mass has started at the new Maronite Church ... and it is putting the community up in arms. Part of it (I think) may be divisive; I'm not sure who instigated the starting of that Mass but I know that the Bishop of my diocese closed that particular Roman Catholic Church and moved the original Spanish Mass to another nearby Church.

But regardless of the start -- I just want to find out more, so that when I am questions (as I have already been questioned) I can answer correctly, and openly. I mean -- if more people attend Church because of the presence of that Mass then great ... I'm just hoping that it won't be another cause of division at my already divided parish.

I personally can't, but my best friend is Maronite. I could probably get some answers from him. Any specific questions?

I'm curious as to the differences in the Liturgy. That is one that is interesting to me. And is there somewhere where I can buy a Missal (or do they have something of the sort)?

The woman who I was talking with was like "they're the same" and I was like "no -- they're not". She probably is missing the details, or I'm wrong. I'd like to know in either case :)

The wikipedia article is a fairly solid start. The Maronite Church has always been Catholic.

This seems like a solid enough introduction to the liturgy itself. I have not tracked down an English Maronite missal at this point though.

Sometimes it helps to break it down, lets see, Mar O nite, umm, Maro Nite, uhh how about Maron it e .

I hope that clears it up for you.

I have been to mass at a Maronite parish. I like it. the one thing that really throws me is the use of intinction. That said it seems strange to me when the priest substitutes at my parish and does it there, too. It is petty, I know.

Father Mitch Pacwa is a Maronite Catholic who became a Jesuit and was granted the privilege to do Masses in both Rites. Also, their name sounds cool. That's all I can tell you.

Why? If you're doubting its validity, check the sources. Otherwise, give up your circa 2005 prejudices.

Basilisa Marie

I've been to a Maronite liturgy a few times. It's definitely longer, and the one I went to was almost entirely in Lithuanian (? I think?). Have you ever been to any Eastern rite liturgy? It's more similar to a Byzantine liturgy than our Roman rite. It's very beautiful. :) Most churches have a missal you can use in the pew or in the vestibule, that includes translations. You can probably find one online.
