Spem in alium
So...I guess you could say that things went downhill today as far as my health goes. Because I was dumb and thoughtlessly put too much weight on my already injured knee, I've now got very limited pain-free movement and am constricted a great deal by soreness in my knee and ankle, and to a lesser extent in my hip. The nurse I saw was very considerate. There's a chance my knee could swell up, so I need to keep an eye on it. I have to ice my knee each day, keep it elevated and strapped. I'm on painkillers, though the chance of them helping this pain seems limited. I'm not allowed to play sport or do a lot of walking, which kind of ruined my plans for the long weekend coming up. The crew team just asked me to cox, seeing as I can't row. Coxing would be a dream position for me - I'd still be on the team, and I wouldn't need to use my legs. I had to turn them down for now. While coxing isn't exactly exercise, I know I wouldn't be able to commit myself physically and emotionally. This whole afternoon I've felt that my body's just wanted to break down and cry, and I've been putting it off every time. Plus with the limited amount of sleep I'm getting due to the suitemates (and it could potentially be worse due to the pain now), waking up at 4:30AM will be very hard. I'm determined not to let this ruin any of my experience here. All for you, Jesus! I just need to work out how I'm going to get myself into bed (I'm in a bunk bed, on the top bunk)...probably going to need to utilise my non-existent upper body strength! Goodnight, dear pham

I think my parents are around this coming weekend, if you need a place to escape and relax.
AnneLine
Absolutely...do the room change..... ( and would it kill one of your suitemates to do a one or two night switch in the meantime? Good grief! I can't believe it. Frankly, they make me embarassed to be an American....! ) I am so sorry Spem! Is there any kind of a Disabled Students office? If so they may have a van you can use to get around campus... and often they can also help if you need other accommodations...... I'll say a prayer that maybe the coxing will work out once your leg starts to quiet down.... and one for you as well that you will keep on doing well in spite of ALL the stuff that has been happening!!!!! I managed to get into bed with surprisingly less effort than I thought I would need (though I had to do it very slowly...). Thanks so much. I think I'm going to Mass with them on Sunday (your mum emailed me and asked me, and I said I'd love to) but am going to call them to confirm. Though I love campus, it's always nice to get away
Absolutely...do the room change.....
Thanks so much! It's okay - I definitely know that not all Americans are like this, even just from being here on Phatmass! My roommate was really considerate when she found out that I was injured, she said if I need anything to let her know. And one of my suitemates (who is really lovely - and a practicing Catholic too, I think) was really kind also. It's just the three others... Having my own space would really help. I'd be able to elevate my leg in the comfort of my own room The only thing is that I wouldn't have a fridge handy for my icepack, but if I get in to this new room I might see if I can hire a fridge. I was in my room yesterday before I went to the clinic, and the pain was so intense I thought I should call security and ask them if they could come and get me. I would have if my suitemates + a couple of guys weren't here (it would have been really awkward for me if security showed up while they were there). so I got myself there. Walking is less painful for me now that I'm wearing a brace. It still hurts, but my leg's not taking all the weight it was before. There is a Disability Services group on campus, so I could get in touch with them and see what kind of things they could provide. Thanks for your prayers! I hope coxing works out too. My family and friends, when they found out that I was rowing, all asked me if I'm cox (because I'm pretty short). I had to say "no" then...but maybe things will change in the next couple of weeks! I'm staying strong (despite randomly breaking down - need to control my tear ducts a little better!). God is keeping me strong.
AnneLine
Spem, you have a wonderful attitude. You are an inspiration. Could you tell us what a 'cox' is? Thank you!
Archaeology cat
I can very much relate to the knee pain. M junior year of uni, I had my second knee surgery, and had to be in an immobilising brace. I also had a bad roommate situation that year, and it was just no fun. I will pray for you. You are an inspiration. Could you tell us what a 'cox' is? Thank you!
Thank you! - though I don't really see myself as an inspiration. I'm simply very ordinary. Of course! The cox is the person who sits at the back of the boat and basically steers (commands the boat, tells people what to do, yells at people - though positively, etc.). I'm quite softly spoken and never really yell or want to take charge, so it will be a very new experience for me. Sorry for not explaining before
I can very much relate to the knee pain. I imagine that would have been so very hard. I'm glad you were able to get through those things. Your prayers for me are greatly appreciated - know that they are reciprocated ETA: Despite my leg feeling very upset, I'm doing well. I needed to climb three flights of stairs today, and it wasn't as horrendous as I thought it would be (probably because I do it every day, and probably because I worked hard to not focus on the pain.) My ankle is unhappy, and my knee has been hurting a lot on its own, which the nurse said is probably because it's irritated enough to send itself into spasms. The poor thing, I think it probably needs a load of TLC I can no longer cross my legs (which is probably a good thing, as I hear it's not the best posture). I had a quiz this afternoon which, judging by my feeling, went very badly. I had studied, but all I could really focus on was the pain. I'll see how my mark goes, and if it's dreadful I'll try and improve for the next test - and strive to be pain-free by then! Earlier I said that I'd have a hard time waking up at 4:30AM with suitemates & pain, so am holding off on being a cox. Well, this morning, guess what time I woke up? Admittedly I did swiftly fall back to sleep and slept for two more hours... Edited October 2, 2012 by Spem in alium
TheresaThoma
Go for being a cox. I did it for a bit and it was fun. Let them know you need some time to heal up though. I'm sure they will understand!

My roommate left for her long weekend last night, so I've got the room to myself. How I've missed having the freedom to get out of bed early, turn my light on and do stuff! We do have a loungeroom here that I use when she's sleeping, but there's nothing like a bedroom
Spem in alium
Guys...I just emailed my RD taking up her offer of the room change. Was a bit stressed about it...but I feel so relieved now! Now all that's left is to confirm the change, sort out the proceedings,...and actually move

Lil Red
i think you made a smart decision, and I think it would be a good idea to extend an invitation to the girls you are friendly with, to come over for a tv show watching party or something? i dunno...just an idea to maybe help smooth the move over? Spem in alium
Thank you Red, that's a great idea! Though I don't have a TV - so I'll think of some other things I could plan. Edited October 4, 2012 by Spem in alium
Spem in alium
Pretty sure I got the room Just waiting on paperwork - and for the other girl to move out. My long weekend was fabulous. Practically no one around. I had the greatest downtime I've had since I got here, and I got the chance to rest my injury. I feel so refreshed. A couple of my suitemates came back earlier tonight (including the girl who's been cold towards me). They are roommates, so I went to their room, said hi and chatted about the weekend. One was really polite and friendly, but the girl who's been cutting me off barely acknowledged or looked at me. And for pretty much the first time since I've been here, I didn't feel confused or troubled by how she acted. Maybe it's because I'm moving or because I've had some time alone, or maybe it's just because I'm dealing with it better. She deserves my love and patience, even if her behaviour can be hurtful and uncalled for.
Spem in alium
Pham...it's official...I've acquired a new room! I'm going to move in very soon! It kind of smells of elderberries to leave my roommate though. She went away for the weekend, and when she came back here she had brought a hat, some mittens and a blanket for me to borrow. She's so kind. I'm going to try and get her a small gift to say thank you for all her help.
