mantellata
Anything is good but how about starting with listing what it is that draws you to the community (then they can clarify if your perception is correct about the community) and then think of something specific that you would like to know as it relates to your own personal discernment - concerns, joys etc... If you are too general - you can expect a general response. Example: how do I best discern a vocation - will likely be met with Daily Mass (if possible), Adoration of the blessed sacrament, confession, increased time for prayer and openness to God's will -- oh and "join us for a retreat!" if they have one coming up. Better would be something like -- What did you find was your biggest stumbling block to being open to God's will? Was there a book that you found particularly helpful in discerning a vocation to this community? Or - if you had to list only 3 things, what would you say are the three most distinctive things about your community's charism as opposed to say - any other faithful community out there? You will probably get more helpful answers that way. Edited September 8, 2012 by mantellata
TheresaThoma
The question about books is a wonderful one. It can be so helpful in carrying on communication, you can email or talk with the Sister about the book. Some of my earliest conversation with the VD of the community I am discerning with were about books! Something else I found helpful was to jot down questions when they came to me, I always seem to forget them. When I was writing to Sister I could look at those notes and decide which ones I really wanted to ask.
MeteorShower
I heard back from them! A Sr. Theresa Christi responded. I have a ton of questions, but now that I'm not nervous about emailing them anymore... I CAN'T REMEMBER ANY OF THE QUESTIONS!
YAY!!!! That's so exciting!! They must have a lot of vocation directors/assistants. I spoke to two of them - neither of whom were Sister Joseph Andrew or Sister Theresa Christi. emmaberry
Can you ask vocations directors ANYTHING? I mean, like how to deal with problems with discernment? Or more like just questions about the order itself?
Definitely take mantellata's advice, and remind yourself frequently that it is highly unlikely [s]to [/s]you will ask something or have a'strange' inquiry they have not heard before! I am sure they have had to deal with some crazy questions/emails, so a nice level-headed inquirer like you is surely warmly welcomed by the Sister conversing with you! Her name is beautiful.
