There is a very good reason as to why their habit is grey. The Friars adopted the grey habit because that is the color of the tunic St. Francis wore. The Sisters adopted the same color. :)

This is an ongoing debate within the Franciscan Order. Behold the original habit of Saint Francis (right) and Saint Clare (middle):

Decide for yourselves whether the habit is brown or grey. I am pleased that my Sister's serge habit (in person) looks just like Clare's original. A very unique combination of grey and brown. Most daughters and sons of Saint Francis agree though that it is not the color of the habit that matters, but its reflection of the poverty Franciscans love so much.

I've never seen the habit of Francis in person. Sr. Francis of the CFRs told me that this is why their habits are grey. St. Clare's habit is beautiful! :)

Thanks for submitting the Hoodie nuns! I have never heard of them before!! ;-)
Several of the pictures of the "hoodie nuns" look as if they were taken at the Bet Jamal convent [monastery?] just down the road from me in Bethlehem. Some years ago a female Israeli filmaker made a documentary about them. There's a small article in Wikipedia, and a YouTube search located this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpMyohnh6G8

I've never wanted to be a nun. I told my spiritual father that I would be a nun if I could wear a hood. (I've been wearing hoodies half my life and feel naked without a hood.) Then I discovered the Sisters of Bethlehem. Now it's our joke that they're the "nuns with hoods". Wish I could figure out how to post a photo but I do love their habits: simple and monastic.
That is so funny! God works in mysterious ways .. and He has a great sense of humor! They do wear those hoods down sometimes though. But there's a full veil underneath :like: Love this picture

p.s. just realized the topic of this thread .. okay, well I think the Sisters of Bethlehem would be one of my favorites .. and Carmelites of course!! preferably Spanish

Why? Bethlehem because of the blue for Our Lady  and the combination with the Carthusian habit which is pretty razzle dazzle! (getting to like that term now) Carmelites, because. no words necessary. Why Spanish? because it's the habit Holy Mother wore :saint:

For active religious, I think my favorite is the SSVMs. I love the bright blue veils and especially how they fall in the back, reminds me of Our Lady

Yes, we have a secular Carmelite who does beautiful craft work and she makes habits for dolls that she buys. She always chooses the most beautiful dolls and then puts them into different Carmelite habits. She has made a postulant, a Novice, several professed nuns - sometimes with their habits 'tucked up' and sometimes with mantle or with salve candle etc. She is so clever and does all kinds of other 'little works' as well. This doll was one she did this year for Our Mother's Feast Day, when we display things that all of the nuns (and some people like this OCDS) have done. Here are some photos of the tables set up to display the 'little works' that were done during the year. It was a very special feast day this year because it was also the 90th anniversary of the foundation of this community and the 450th anniversary of the Teresian Reform.

I made the red and white afghan (unfinished on the day but Mother wanted to display it anyway) and the brown scapulars for the OCDS (they are larger than the usual brown scapulars worn by most people. and the brown breviary cover in the last photo was given to me by Mother later on 'gift giving day' which is part of the whole celebration (Our Mother's Feast Day celebrations include several other days during the week). Most of the items shown here are given away to benefactors, relatives and friends as gifts, but sisters will sometimes receive items from the tables on gift giving day (along with other little gifts that Mother thinks that sister needs). This year we all got a copy of the newly published Carmelite Missal as well in our gift bags. The British flags in the community room (where we have Recreation) are in tribute to the Olympics held this year in London.

PS - edited to say sorry to hijack this thread which is about habits!

Awesome!! Thank you nunsense! Hijack is appreciated from me at least! :proud: That is so neat how she sews all different kinds/stages of formation habits like that! :like: I've always wanted to try to make one for an American girl doll .. with a postulant dress and all. Seems like the perfect going away present for a little niece doesn't it?

That doll is really cute! She even has little sandals. :)

It reminds me of how one of the Sister's in Carmel made little outfits for a statue of the Child Jesus for different times of the year and for feast days. He even had a Carmelite habit that He wore on His Mother's feast day (July 16th) and other Carmelite feast days. He looked like a little Carmelite monk with even the mantle with the hood that the Carmelite monks wear.

Cristo Rey Carmel in San Francisco has one of those 'little Infant Jesus in a habit' dolls -- a sleeping one. Sometimes he wears a little night dress... but often is sporting His Habit. They call him the Father General..... ;)

That makes sense. COMMANDING in a good way! Seeing religious, brings my attention to good and positive feelings and thoughts! ;) I lean more towards the formal habit/darker color style..most likely due to my limited exposure/experiance back in the day! As we have seen....habits come in a wonderful array of colors.

If anyone has the chance to go to San Antonio, you can see the habits of the first Franciscan missionaries to the region at the Mission of San Jose. The two missions I visited/attended mass in were still run by Franciscans, but instead of blue-gray habits, they are now brown. It's fascinating.

Bl. Junipero Serra (Fray Junipero Serra) was the Franciscan in charge of 'Alta California' -- modern California. "Baja California" is the peninsula off the bottom of California, and it is still part of Mexico.

I can't be sure about the Francisans who were in San Antonio (Texas) but I do know about the ones who were in California. The Franciscans in California wore the grey ones -- and it had to do with them being missionaries sent to New Spain (i.e., Mexico). Not sure if it was a decision that was made in Spain, or if they just couldn't get the brown stuff cheaply!

My bet is that the Franciscans would always select the color that was most simple, humble and cheap!

Originally, the Franciscans used undyed wool, therefore the colour of their habits really depended on the colour of the sheep :rabbit: .( just pretend that that is a sheep)

Most sheep are grey/white, and so the franciscans, in england especially, became known as the 'grey frairs'.

If you look closely, you will see that the friars in the paint on the Portiuncula, are infact, in grey habits!

AVE MARIA!!
