Actually a priest brought up a good point w.r.t swear words. A swear word in and of itself is not sinful ... it is in bad taste, bad etiquete but not sinful.

Now, if you use that towards a brother or a sister with a bad meaning involved (i.e. "you're a ______") then that may change the sinfulness of it.

Finally using God's name in vain is another story too.
