TheUbiquitous
Is there a good source for short summaries of the various charisms of the various orders? I really don't have a clue about where I should be discerning. I've been going at it sort of piecemeal.

emmaberry
have you taken the vision vocation survey
Yes, this is a good idea. Also, with all the experience some VSers have, you may want to just outline what you feel drawn to, including devotional practices, etc. For example, are you drawn toward solitude or serving Jesus through others? Are you feeling called to serve in foreign countries, or stay in the US? If you expand on things like that, VSers would be happy to point you to a spirituality/order that fits what you feel drawn to-ie Benedictines, Augustinians, Franciscans, Jesuits, Carmelite, etc.

There's a community about 20 minutes away from me that I've gotten to know pretty well who have taught me so much about religious life. I know I'm not called there, but they helped me a lot in my discernment and being close, I could see them often. The community I hope to enter is a couple of hours away and in my diocese, so you don't have to go across the country to find your vocation--it may be around the corner. I figured I would go across the country to find my community. I ended up finding it only 3 hours away, much to my unhappy surprise! Unhappy only because here in the desert area of Texas it is UG-LY. Roswell is pretty 'desert' like as well.
TheresaThoma
Definitely start checking out communities close to you. Even if you don't feel called to them it can help you better refine what you would be looking for in a community.

Dominicans would fit this category --- who else?
