Ed Normile
I was listening to EWTN global radio yesterday and they had a news story about a theif in Italy that stole a vial of Pope John Paul II's blood that was held by a priest. It said the authorities had recovered the vial of blood and returned it to the priest. I have seen or heard nothing about this on any other news outlet, has anyone else heard of this? Thank God they retrieved this relic of a Pope that will be canonized a saint IMO. ed
arfink
Oh, the theft and sale and even fights over relics has been happening for centuries. I hadn't heard of this particular case before, but in the middle ages this was not uncommon IIRC.

Most people back then saw them as magical items that would give the owner luck or some special blessing if they held it, not thinking about the fact that they had stolen them or even killed someone else to obtain the relic in the first place. I don't think that God would endorse such actions. I'm sure the saints whose relics were stolen wasn't happy about it either.
TheUbiquitous
If you got a blood transfusion from a man later canonized, would you be a first-, second-, or third-class relic?
Nihil Obstat
If you got a blood transfusion from a man later canonized, would you be a first-, second-, or third-class relic?
None of the above, because your blood is recycled so frequently that you'd have none left within days.
