Blue Cloud Abbey was a Benedictine monastery located near Marvin, South Dakota. It was a member of the Swiss-American Congregation. The patron saint of the monastery was the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of "Our Lady of the Snows".

Blue Cloud was founded in 1950 from St. Meinrad Abbey in Indiana. The monks were involved in ministry on several Indian reservations. The monastery was founded by Saint Meinrad Archabbey (Swiss American Congregation), 24 June 1950, raised to a priory, 5 August 1952 and to an abbey, 21 March 1954. On 29 May 2012 the Benedictine monks of Blue Cloud Abbey, Marvin, South Dakota, voted to close their monastery.

The reason for closure is the lack of vocations and the aging of the monks. Although the abbey successfully managed a retreat center for groups and individuals, the monastery was not able to draw a sufficient number of new members. After Sunday, 5 August 2012, the Abbey was officially closed. No public liturgies will be celebrated, and all scheduled retreats are canceled. The remaining monks will be dispersed to other Abbeys in USA.

I might have posted the news when they annound that they would be closing. It's now a fait accompli, and it was done in pretty short order.

Thanks for clarifying that, Luigi... I was pretty sure I remembered this!

It is sad, but I give them credit for realizing that it was time to make the decision. My bet is that they probably had already made the decision and the arrangements before the first announcement....

I wish them all very well and pray for them and for their receiving communities....
