Maggyie
Okay people who know about cars. I have a 2007 Hyundai Accent with 100,000 miles on it. It's making a whirring noise when I press the gas pedal. At high speeds (like on the highway) it goes away. But in stop and go traffic, when I go... it's there. I took it in today to have the transmission flushed. The mechanic said, "it's definitely time, you have metal shavings in your fluid, that will really damage your transmission pretty fast." After the fluid exchange it's still making that annoying sound. What do you think. Am I up a creek without a paddle. Car hasn't broken down yet, just this funny noise.. Incidentally I just put $1400 into the car getting belts replaced, break pads, wheel bearing and joint replaced and so forth. This was done at the dealership and they didn't mention anything about the transmission... but I suppose they didn't check.
xTrishaxLynnx
Have you tried posting this or searching for info on the issue on a car help forum? I think it's going to be hard for anyone to help over the internet without hearing the sound themselves, unless they've experienced the same thing - so maybe try this, a Hyundai help forum: http://www.hyundai-forums.com/184-mc-2006-2011-accent/ Good luck! r2Dtoo
It's going to blow up in flames in your driveway. Wait, you don't have Chevy Volt? Nevermind.

If it's your tranny, it's probably going to lug and lose power, too.
Maggyie
Thanks for the link! I googled but I felt helpless before the waterfall of data.
If it's your tranny, it's probably going to lug and lose power, too.
So you don't think it's the tranny? I guess it could just be biding its time. We are buying a house and I really can't afford all this croutons right now. I just paid it off this month. I took it back to the dealership and they wanted $50 to just open the hood.

morostheos
So have the mechanics tried to diagnose the sound and fixed all those other things in the process or was that stuff unrelated? If the dealership charges all that money, I'd recommend finding a good, local mechanic. They will often take a quick look at stuff for free and give you their opinion without doing official diagnostics, plus it costs a LOT less than getting things repaired at the dealership. Anomaly
An honest and compentent mechanic is rare. When you do find one, keep going to him. I don't like dealers because you are so removed from having a relationship with the mechanic and there is always someon different working on your car. Metal 'shavings' are real bad. It's normal to have a small amount of metal particles in a tran w/ 100k miles. I'd recommend going to a transmission place (if you didn't already), but you've masked some diagnosis symptoms with a trans flush. If it was a trans place that flushed it, bring it back and ask about the noise. If you spent that much money on the other repairs, you were a little ripped off. If the cars paid off, sometimes it's better keeping it going then buying new. It takes a catastrophe to make a car not worth fixing. If the engine is weak (probably not at 100k) then it wouldn't make sense to fix the tran. If the engine and most everything else is good, then it may not be pleasant, but fixing a trans will pay off in the long run.
CatherineM
If you want to find a good, honest mechanic, drop into the local VFW and ask the old guys sitting at the bar.
