Ed Normile
I know its not any of you good people ! I am not sure if there are even any or if its just a dirty rumor ! Eternal Rest, grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the rest in Peace. Amen The above prayer is a powerful indulgenced prayer, but all you good catholics know that already, so just remind all your buddies to say that short prayer just once a day, twice for good measure. ed
Nihil Obstat
There is something called the "Rorate Caeli Purgatorial Society", which is an informal network of, I believe now 17 priests, who offer a weekly Traditional Mass for the repose of the soul of those deceased Catholics who are enrolled by surviving relatives. Excellent idea, and btw they always want the names of souls to enroll for their intentions. http://rorate-caeli.blogspot.com/2012/07/update-strengthening-rorate-caeli.html
PhuturePriest
I say the Saint Gertrude Prayer, which is said to release one thousand souls each time you recite it. I have always had a devotion to praying for the souls in purgatory ever since I was young enough to have baseball sized Rosary beads, and it always shocks me when people do not pray for them, do not know why they should, or do not even know what purgatory is! Ash Wednesday
I think one reason why Catholics don't think to pray for the souls in purgatory is that they've been conditioned away from praying for the dead and often don't see the need to do it. When people die, it's often assumed they're in heaven and a lot of funerals are practically a canonizing ceremony. It smarts to think of our loved ones as being anywhere else but heaven when we lose them and don't know where they are, but to not pray for them does them a great disservice. I'm not sure what the debate is, either, save for people that don't understand why Catholics pray for the dead. But yes, it is an important thing to do and good to remember. Studiumecclesiae
Total agreement, the Catholics just lost the habit. The new liturgy (divine office) deleted all reference to the dead: "may the soul of the faithful departec... etc." as well as lots of other references to the dead. But I know offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass lessens the pain of the souls in purgatory for a temporary way.
To Jesus Through Mary
The new liturgy (divine office) deleted all reference to the dead: "may the soul of the faithful departec... etc."
No it did not. The prayers for the faithful departed are in the Liturgy of the Hours everyday during Evening Prayer. It is the last petition. And if you are adding additional petitions as a community, you add them prior to praying for the faithful departed to give further emphasis to the importance of the prayer.
