Nihil Obstat
These are sensitive questions revolving around the nature of Authority. What we know is that the Church is protected from error but this sphere of protection is limited. In other words, the gaurantee of infallibility does not extend to everything, even though good Catholics are still obliged to be obedient in these fallible matters (this too has limitations.) What this leaves is a human element to the authority that is still legitimate, but none the less fallible. It is possible therefore that our Authority can make an imprudent decision, and this possibility become a reality several times in our history. Alcuin Reid's The Organic Development of the Liturgy delves into several of these cases, and I would recommend reading his book. It is far from an extremist book, being that it is published by Ignatius Press and has a forward by then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. I personally at this time don't want to speculate on what the correct answer to this question is, I simply don't know enough to answer.
That one is on my shelf, and perhaps the next in line to be read. ^_^ For anyone truly interested in the reform of the reform concept, IMO Laszlo Dobszay's two books are absolutely invaluable. I simply cannot recommend them strongly enough. His perspective on potential solutions, for instance when he's talking about proper chants or the cycle of readings, are both innovative and irreproachably traditional. Catholicterp7
I have been going to the Latin Mass every Sunday, as much as I'm able, for about four years now. I absolutely love the silence that it offers. Personally I feel more able to participate through the chant and the silence. It enables me to focus less on the words and more on the reality of what is happening. It also fosters an atmosphere of respect. I know that the NO can be done very respectfully and beautifully but it's easy for it to be done in a very disrespectful manner as well. With the EF it's a lot harder, if not impossible, to celebrate it in an irreverent manner simply by nature of the words that are spoken. I'm going to be joining a Schola pretty soon and I'm very excited about it!
fides' Jack
I would like to believe that but it isn't easy. It was clear from the start I didn't approve of "chicken man", nor any of the other "nicknames" you came up with yet you continued to ask. That didn't seem very respectful. No means no. If you truly want to be friends repeatedly asking if you can call me some kind of chicken man after I was clearly not going to be razzle dazzle with that wasn't the best way to start the friendship.
You're right, and I apologize. I was not in a good frame of mind last week - even worse now - I haven't been thinking straight. A LOT of really hard stuff going on with my family members. It's clear that my family (parents and brothers) will never be the same again. Please pray for us. Still, I wasn't trying to mock you - but I haven't been thinking clearly the last few weeks - and I think I've been letting out some of my frustrations by posting ridiculously here.
