I read a story about this one. It's called "Madonna of the Streets". The woman was an Italian girl whom the artist saw carrying her baby brother in the streets. When she came of age, she immigrated to the US. Her husband died or abandoned her or something, and she was left with a bunch of kids. Eventually, she lost her mind and was institutionalized. A few years ago, her daughter saw this painting and recognized the girl as her mother. She contacted the artist or gallery or whomever and they wrote a story about it.

Cuz the daughter was a nun. :punk:
EDIT: I really dig that "Mary Comforts Eve" one, too. Downloaded it for laptop wallpaper. :-)

This is the Annunciation by Francesco Mochi (1605) or so. It's in Orvieto (Italy), in a small museum.

It's my favorite Annunciation because Mary is somewhat startled and taken aback - she's not running away, but she's ready to. I don't know if that's how Mary actually reacted in the moment, but it would be a perfectly understandable reaction.

I have two that I feel obligated to post.

First is the "Dispute Over the Immaculate Conception" in Florence.

I saw it in person and I simply could not tear myself away from it. Absolutely beautiful, and so much faith in the canvas. I especially like the depictions of the Fathers in the middle. I cannot remember now who is who, but I really should look that up again. If I remember correctly, St. Bernard is the epic guy on the far right. But again, I really cannot remember.

Then on the other end, for austere simplicity and kind of 'exotic' cultural expressions of Marian iconography, I really love some of the Japanese depictions of the Madonna.

This one is beautiful. I love the expression... Very stern, perhaps even angry, but so much concern and love.

I always love the Japanese depictions of the Theotokos.

Can you explain the first one? They are debating over the Immaculate Conception, and the Father and the Theotokos are watching them from above?

As I understand it, the Doctors of the Church are debating over the Immaculate Conception (because, of course, for a long time it was not a settled question). Mary and God the Father are overseeing, but Mary is depicted as very much having been conceived immaculately (so in the painting itself the question is considered settled). If I remember correctly, the elements of Mary herself in the painting are pretty clear about her role. The colour of her garments, her posture, the angels and scrolls around her, etc.. The flowers as well. The Doctors are pointing towards the fallen Eve below them, clearly exploring the link between Eve and Mary as the New Eve. I forget what all the scrolls and books say, but it was rather important as well.
Then, those better versed in depictions of the saints are able to identify which Doctors and Fathers are being depicted here, which is completely relevant. It basically draws from each of their theological viewpoints to sort of set the stage.

I think perhaps that painting is actually called Allegory of the Immaculate Conception. I am not quite sure. I remember distinctly seeing two paintings, one of which was "Allegory", and the other being "Dispute", but now I am not sure I remember which was which.
