If I am thinking the same thing as sixpence, it's a kind of prayer (similar to the Divine Office), but if I'm not mistaken, it has protestant roots and is relatively new. I could be wrong about the Protestant root thing, though, I'm incredibly tired. Oh, and my opinion is no taize for Mass. I'm really a polyphony and chat kind of girl. Spem in alium
I have only listened to one Taize song, and I liked it. It helped me pray. But in Mass, it might not work as well. Luigi
Taize (pronounce Tay-ZAY) is a town in the Burgundy region of France. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiz%C3%A9_Community It hosts an ecumenical monastic group. A particular style of music evolved there. Amppax
Here's a good example of it. Not sure what the heck is in the picture, but its a good example of the music. cappie
I believe that Taizé worship is a service that fills a place in the liturgical life of a congregation, which otherwise can be wordy. We need the evocative, the haunting, and the beautiful.
Papist
From my what I have experienced, the songs are always very repetitive, but it is always at least a whole sentence (I think "centering prayer" might be a single word/phrase, but I'm not sure). It IS meditative, but kind of reminds me more of the repetition in praying the rosary or the divine mercy chaplet and less like a "mantra" precisely? I dunno if that made sense...
My experience was not through song, but with quiet repetitive phrases facilitated by a nun. The whole experience stunk of new age poo-poo. It probably is not a fair assessment of taize prayer b/c this nun was pretty much dissenting in her beliefs.
filius_angelorum
I like some taize music outside of Mass, but within Mass it seems to me to emphasize the personal/devotional aspect of Mass to the exclusion of the liturgical/devotional. However, some of the songs seem to me to follow the modern trend of making something incredibly complex sound simple and humble, which baffles community participation, rather than making something simple and humble sound complex. They will receive an unfinished letter written by Brother Roger shortly before he was killed, in August. They will also receive a message from the Pope, saying in part: "May the example of the founder of Taize and the tireless testimony of Pope John Paul II in favor of dialogue and peace encourage you to be peacemakers in your turn." The Pope's message praises the legacy of Brother Roger and encourages the Taize community to continued building "a spirit of brotherhood and peace."
