If it comes down to your teacher asking why you didn't annotate a sex scene, then you can explain that you don't want to be tempted and what have you.

I doubt a teacher would make this request...I would think it very, very bizarre for a high school English (or is it History) teacher to ask his or her students to outline the specifics of a sex scene. At most you would write something like "after character x and character y had relations" if it's relevant to the goings-on of the plot.

This will be what I remember when I think of junior year.

You haven't even started the school year yet. No one really takes summer reading that seriously. If anything you discuss it the first week of class and that's it. But if everyone has read a different book then there really can't be group discussion. If you were really uncomfortable with a book assigned halfway through the year that you'd have class discussion, quizzes, and essays on, that's another story (no pun intended).

Anyway I doubt these sex scenes you've mentioned are longer than a couple pages. And unless the teacher wants to be penalized or fired for handing out racy novels to underage kids, I doubt the content is bad. Just skim or skip.

Cliffs Notes?

It's not cheating . . .

That's a matter of debate really. When I was in high school English, our teacher warned us against using them because she considered them cheating, and owned the copies for each of the books she assigned.

I know, I was only joking. Though I admit to not reading one of my set books when I was in high school (Heart of Darkness) and just reading up the Cliffs Notes because I found it so dull.

I just didn't read it all. :ninja: Ironically, I contributed more to the discussion of that book and "As I Lay Dying," which I also didn't finish, than any of the books I DID read all the way through.

Okay I'm glad I never had to read Heart of Darkness. I kinda can't say anything about you desiring to use the Cliff Notes version for it, because I tried reading it once and couldn't. :|

Heart of Darkness quite possibly the worst book ever written. If you ever have trouble sleeping, get a copy. You'll drift right off.

I use the Communist Manifesto for that actually. Marx is without a doubt one of the most boring writers I have ever encountered. (I'm going to admit right here, I've never made it through the entire document...) A friend went on this whole Communism kick once and decided to read all of Das Kapitol...by the time he finished he hated Marx with a burning passion for being so boring and was firmly in favor of a free market again. :)

What can I say? I was very forutnately. The only requirements I had for Summer reading were catching up for the next school year and reading 9 plays for advanced drama.

:hehe2: I'll keep that in mind if I ever start suffering from insomnia and Heart of Darkness stops working for me.

I hope you never have to find out though!

YAY! I'm glad there was an alternative assignment.

Plus from what I've read, Grapes of Wrath is a much better educational experience. Maybe your teacher thought most of the class wouldn't be able to handle that book, which is why she originally chose the more modern one. Who knows. :)

Heart of Darkness is one of my favorite books. That being said, it took two reads, and watching Apocalypse Now to really appreciate it.

I have a summer reading assignment too. All I have to do is read the book, and I don't actually have an "assignment" with it. The book is All the Pretty Horses. Anyone heard of it?
