sixpence
If it is extremely difficult to skip around the sex scenes, I think you have a legit excuse to be excused. I think you are approaching it the right way to go through the chaplain. I went to a high school run by the LaSalle brothers, but not all the teachers were Catholic, don't be surprised about encountering things that don't fall in line with the Church, and don't be afraid to call the teacher out on it after class. Maybe you could ask to be assigned some other book to make up for it?

LaPetiteSoeur
The Grapes of Wrath is AMAZING! If you are eager for more steinbeck once school starts, read East of Eden. It is one of my all time favorite books!
the171
It's been on my reading list for months. How long is The Grapes of Wrath? I had a copy, but lost it.
LaPetiteSoeur
My copy is around 620 pages. The print is really big though (my copy is rather old).

LaPetiteSoeur
Do you have to hand in the annotated part the first day back? If not you have more time, because usually the first day is orientation type activities.
the171
Some website said around 464. I can do it. I've read 500 in one night. I'm sure I can annotate 464 in two nights. I'll do every other page.

HisChildForever
You could probably just skip the sex scenes and not miss anything serious of the plot. Sex is part of life. It's going to be in a lot of books. Thus have I ruled.
Agreed. From what I remember, The Scarlet Letter had no intimate scenes but the entire book revolved around sex. I also remember reading Madame Bovary in college which deals with extramarital relations. If you shun books with some sexual content then you'll miss out on some great literature.
