You should see arfink when he gets a new idea for using the laser. He sort of flounces around and then spews techo-babble until my eyes glaze a bit then goes and tries it. This has happened at least four or five times today.

Now most people would think that this is an exaggeration. Actually that is pretty close to the real thing.

Hmmm I might have something I would like as a wax seal thingy. I love writing letters and would love to seal them too.

The machine did that for me. I can program it to remove all the surrounding material too, which is what I did here. I managed to find the right combination of speed and power to do this pretty cleanly without producing large amounts of scorching or varnish and it required very little cleanup afterwards except on the very edges, which I did with a file and an abrasive sponge.

How does it do that? Does it cut off the unnecessary layers of wood section by section until the unnecessary layers are completely gone?

How are these sections created? Do you have to define them or does the machine randomly create them without your input?

Or does it turn the piece sideways and cut off the layers? In that case, how does it avoid cutting off the characters of your name?

The machine is cutting from above. In this instance, the laser scans back and forth like a regular printer instead of drawing the outlines, which means that it will pass over all the surface of the piece. As the laser moves the computer controls how it pulses, allowing it to blast away all the parts I have marked off in the software.

In this case it takes several passes with the laser to get it this deep without applying heat too quickly and lighting the wood on fire. :)

For USAirwaysIHS:

EDIT: ARG, did it again! It's backwards. :/
Well, time for another 10 minutes on the machine.

A few minutes of laser-ing, a few minutes cleaning, and now I have this:

Much better!

I could totally send you some coffee mugs that are squarish and you could laser them. Then use some rub-n-buff (gold or silver) and fill it in.

It would look sweet.

I love it! I'm glad you realized it was backwards yourself...I was trying to think of a gentle way to break it to you. :troll:

Well it doesn't need to be pretty...I'll continue in pm so as to not disrupt the flow of the conversation.

Since when has one of your main concerns been not to disrupt the flow of conversations?

I think so. These wooden seals are not designed for wax- it would stick rather terribly methinks. I am going to order some plastic so I can do wax seals and for ConfusedCatholicGuy, a signet ring. :)
