Last month, members of the Lee Heights Baptist Church off Muddy Creek Road discovered the damage when they arrived for church services on Wednesday night. The vandals used the children's toys and art supplies to damage the sanctuary, fellowship hall, and Sunday school rooms. They also smeared food for needy families and their own feces and urine on walls and floors. According to Loudon County Sheriff Tim Guider, all that damage was done by two boys, aged 6 and 7. The boys are not members of the church, but Sheriff Guider said they had attended Vacation Bible School at the church the week before. The church decided not to press charges because of the age of the boys. DCS was called in to investigate because of the apparent lack of supervision of the boys. Sheriff Guider said there was a number of volunteers who showed up to help clean up and repair the church.
The comments are a mixed bag, but any that involve religion tend to be of the theme "religion only exists for people to be able to molest kids/these kids were obviously molested and retaliating". arfink
Sounds real familiar: "Jews only exist to drag our economy down and make us all look really bad!" "Christians only exist to molest our children and keep us from canoodling!"
AnneLine
That's the kind of behaviour we used to see in the residential home for children with SEVERE emotional and other abuse. I am glad DCS is checking into this, and I hope someone is at least having those kids evaluated.... something is .... wrong. (and I DON'T mean that they were abused at the bible school... I mean.... something could be WRONG.) At a minimium, they need to be held responsible SOMEHOW for what they have done... and I wonder about what's going on with the parents..... but that's just me.... What do those of you who are parents think about this? Can you invision any of your kids or those of the kids they go to school with or hang out with doing this at ages 6 or 7? WTH?
My general reaction to the entire piece, but especially that part. Granted 6 and 7 year olds aren't known for their logic usually, but that goes beyond simple misbehavior one might expect of a child. I'm glad DCS is potentially looking into the homes to see why they were that unsupervised. "Sure kids, you're old enough to play in the yard, I'll look out the window once in a while to check up on you" just doesn't equate in my brain with, "Sure kids, you're old enough to go play alone, don't break into a church and destroy it". I'll admit, I was actually surprised to see those sorts of things in the comment section, I'm used to people targeting Catholicism exclusively on sex abuse, but on that article in the comments it's all religion. BG45
AnneLine, I know I'm not a parent, but I have babysat my dissertation chair's middle child (6 years old) a few times. I really can't envision him doing something like this. The worst thing he's ever done while we've hung out together was to throw a jelly bean at me for not being excited enough when he beat a level on a DS game. AnneLine
Brilliant minds, guys. I'm not a parent either, and was just wondering what those of you with 'normal' kids (and have seen perhaps some badly trained normal-ish kids) would think. That kind of behavior was day in day out with the kids at the residential treatment facility.... trust me, you have NEVER lived..... or had your heart broken each day. Such truly damaged litle ones. One minute, they would be like every other kid... and 30 seconds later.... literally you could be cleaning up the above, or taking somebody to the hospital because they had a freshly-broken finger.... or worse... I'm just glad somebody is checking into it...

I can't imagine my kids or any kids I know behaving like that. It's NOT normal. Six and seven year olds (and their parents) should be held responsble to help in the clean-up and restitution. I'm glad DCS is looking into it.
CatherineM
Why were 6 and 7 year olds unsupervised long enough to do this? If they were at bible camp, where was the teacher? Where we're their parents?

He beat a level, that's serious business. You should have been as excited as he was.
AnneLine
Technically if he hit you, I think jelly-bean throwing is an assault..... we would have had to write that up at the Residential Care center... but I think I would let that one pass.... Ya know, we need a food fight emoticon....
