Birthday Presents For Discerners

I have two friends whose birthdays are coming up and ironically, they are both discerning the religious life. :)

I need help figuring out what to get them. Oh my gosh, I have no clue.

Friend #1 probably has all of the books ever written about spiritualities of religious orders, as well as some of the most common saints. If there is a book out there (that is easy to get) that any of you think would be good for someone who has it all, please tell me, haha! Or any unique but possible idea would be amesome.

Friend #2 is in not as serious discernment as friend #1. But she feels called to an active Franciscan spirituality. She LOVES religious jewelry, but like friend #1 has a lot of it. :)

Any ideas?

Go.

I was thinking more of the kind of things they could take with them when they entered, but like you said they are still discerning. :) Its still not a bad idea if you were to find things that you could get them that they could keep and/or use in the religious life. Some communites do allow certain items that they may enter in with; with permission of course. Do they like to write? There is a lot of beautiful religious stationary. Here is a website that has many beautiful items maybe you will want to look at. I guess you would have to order online, as I don't know if you could find these items in any store.

Main website: http://www.catholicstationery.com/

I don't know your price range but on the same website they have beautiful blanket throws: http://www.catholics...com/page16.html

If you could buy online, there are religious communites that have some kind of gift shop on their website where you could get something that they made. Some make rosaries, soaps, holy cards, scapulars and then you could at the same time help the community with your purchase. :)

Well, if you have some money, how about the Liturgy of the Hours ... or at least Christian Prayer (or a single volume)?

BTW the community I was in (#2) required us to get our own LotH ... so depending on country it would work.

One of them has it for sure, and I'm pretty sure the other one does too... Haha.

One of the BEST books I've ever read is Felix Timmerman's The Perfect Joy of St. Francis. Franciscans and non-Franciscans find it to be one of the best bios of St. Francis they have ever seen....

toss in some Monastery soap, and you are set! :)

Hm... If they have tons of things for discernment, how about things non-discernment related but still Religious? You could buy The Essential Catholic Survival Guide by the staff of Catholic Answers, or one of Tim Staples' many DVD's. Catholics And The Culture War is a very good one by him, if you are interested. But you don't have to stop there. I know it is for men, but there is a book by Scott Hahn on the Priesthood which was highly praised by Cardinal Dolan and Archbishop Chaput, or maybe some other theological book by Scott Hahn. He has a wonderful collection of all things Catholicism when it comes to books. Another thing you can't go wrong on is Steven Ray's The Footprints of God where he goes to the Holy Land and shows historical things in the Bible.

For something a little different, how about you give them a voucher towards the cost of travelling for the purposes of discernment? Or some good Christian music (as featured on another thread). Or apply for tickets for one of the EWTN tapings

Phone cards to phone communities. Or gift cards so they can choose their own stuff.
