linnie
I've been given a project by a Sister that I know and I need to find a few orders that are growing and establishing new foundations. I know that some of the Dominicans are expanding. Can any of you suggest others that I can add to my list? thanks, Linnie

TheresaThoma
I know there are a few Carmels that are growing quite rapidly. I don't know the exact ones but there is one that is establishing 2 foundations currently because they have had so many new vocations.
OnlySunshine
I would add these: Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal -- They are steadily growing. While they don't receive as large a group of candidates every year like the DSMMEs in Ann Arbor, they receive 2 to 3 postulants every year. On June 2, 2012, 5 Sisters made their final vows and are permanent members so their numbers are growing! My friend, Lilly, will hopefully enter as a candidate next month if she can raise the full $6,000 for health insurance by that time. Little Sisters of the Poor -- They are constantly growing. They just clothed their new novices in the habit and had first profession last month. Religious Sisters of Mercy of Alma -- They are receiving a steady influx of vocations every year. 10 postulants entered August 1st! Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara -- They receive several postulants every year. Some of our own PMers have entered there including TeresaBenedicta. Sisters of Life -- They have received large postulant classes lately. My friend entered in 2009 with a group of 8 women, I believe. She will be making first vows later this month! They had 7 postulants enter last year. Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration -- Like the Franciscans of the Renewal, they don't receive a large number of postulants, but they have been receiving a steady number of 2-4 a year. Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus -- They usually have about 4-5 women enter the candidacy program each year. Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus -- The Central Province in Kirkwood, MO is the most well known and they received 3 new postulants on July 16th. 2 Sisters re-entered on June 14th and were clothed in the novice habit on July 1st. They also had 3 Sisters make Final Profession of Vows on July 2nd,2011. Edited August 5, 2012 by MaterMisericordiae
OnlySunshine
Also: Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles -- They receive a large number of new postulants every year. Our very own PMer, QueensDaughter, is entering September 15th. The Carmel of Valparaiso (no website) has grown in significant numbers -- so much so that they've had to establish a monastery in Elysburg, PA and another is beginning in Oakland, CA. emmaberry
The Roswell Poor Clares have a steady stream of postulants, and have established 6 foundations under Mother Mary Francis. For them a foundation includes both starting a new monastery and sending a large group of their Sisters to replenish a dying monastery. I think they see it as a sign from God to found when they reach a certain number of sisters, so as long as they have new postulants, they should keep founding as well. I hope your project goes well! OnlySunshine
Do all orders require candidates to pay for health insurance? I don't think I can manage that. I thought nuns just got by on benefactors and kind doctors who treat them for free?
No, not all, but for some, it is becoming the norm. The Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal are stationed in New York and the Archdiocese requires their incoming candidates to provide $6,000 for health insurance in their first 3 years of formation. They do the same with the candidates for the seminary. If she cannot raise the money by the entrance date next month, her entrance will be delayed until next year. It appeared unfair to me at first, especially since they are a mendicant order but then I realized they are just being obedient to their local ordinary. Most religious orders that have a dowry in place for health insurance do not consider it to be a "make it or break it" deal. If the candidate absolutely cannot afford it, they are still allowed to enter as it is not considered an impediment.
This answer is probably not satisfactory for the scope of your question, but I thought I would give an answer concerning cloistered Franciscans, so you could see both sides of the coin. The Roswell Poor Clares do require that you have health insurance in the year of postulancy...maybe into the novitiate. I am unsure because, thankfully, my parents pay for everything, including all my insurance. Here is a thread on this subject: http://www.phatmass.com/phorum/topic/114264-health-insurance-and-religious-life/
ToJesusMyHeart
Thank you both! I guess I need to pray that the Lord lets me enter while I'm still on my parent's insurance...so I've got 6 years to get my behind in the convent!

loveletslive
out of curiousity, why don't they wear habits? i checked out their website, and i appreciate that they look very feminine and don't have the identifiable "LPN" (lapel/little pin nun) look that most un-habited communities have got going on.
