How To Get Rid Of My Debt?!

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I haven't posted on this before, however I thought some of you may have ideas as to how I can go about reconciling a personal debt I owe Mum of only $1500. I have been looking for jobs for the past 9months and so far have only had two call backs, with only one resulting in an interview (which is Tuesday - please pray!). This debt is all that I have standing in my way to apply for the convent. Some people have told me to fundraise, however because my debt isn't a student loan, I'm not sure if fundraising to pay off a personal debt is very fair. What do you guys think?

Thank you in advance for your suggestions and prayers, and please be assured of my prayers for you all!

First of all, welcome! Great to see you here!

Also, do you have anything of value that you could part with to raise the funds? Maybe you could have a garage sale or learn how to make rosaries and sell them at your parish gift shop? Or, you could talk to the Serra Club or Knights of Columbus in your diocese to ask for their help? I know the job market is awful right now. It's reached 8.3% of the country's population. I've been looking for jobs for over 2 years and had little success. :(

Welcome to PM!

I would recommend using any of your talents or tap into ones you didn't know you had. I started making rosaries about a year and a half ago to help fundraise and it's been quite helpful. It's allowed me to increase my monthly student loan payments by $50-$150 depending on the month and my sales.

I would also recommend bake sales (if you are adept in that department) or even a rummage sale.

Prayers for you as you try to make your entrance a reality.

Thanks so much to the both of you for your great suggestions, and of course for your prayers!

Yes the job market is a bit gross at the moment isn't it?! I'm in Australia, however it's pretty bad everywhere from what my friends overseas tell me.

I've been making rosaries and chaplets for a little while, however didn't think they were of 'sellable' quality! I will have to get some honest opinions from family and friends I think....

Great idea re. garage sale etc. - I will definitely look into that.

I'm not too familiar with Serra Clubs and their work, but just Googled it so I'm sussing that out now.

cmtc,

Welcome! If it is a debt to one of your parents, perhaps you could arrange to do some kind of work for her to pay off your debt. On the other hand, if it is a matter of her needing real cash for you to enter the convent, I would have a look through your possessions, find all the stuff you don't need, and sell it on e-bay. Then, if that still doesn't cover it, talk to your priest. He may have some great ideas for fundraising at the parish.

PAX

Also, HopefulBride, where do you sell rosaries? I need a few good rosaries...

eBay is a good way to get rid of unwanted items and make some money. I recently bought a skirt on eBay so someone made money and I got a new skirt! My sister sells shoes and handbags because she keeps buying so many and then realises she has too many! :) You could try selling your Rosaries on eBay.

She has the link on her profile but I'll post it here too:

If I needed more rosaries, I get some there. However, about 2-3 years ago, there was a mission one weekend at my Church for the people of Bethlehem and they needed monetary support so they made these incredible olive wood rosaries. I bought one for $20, had it blessed by the priest that gave me Confession back in 2007 (where I made my reversion), and it's the only one I use now. ;)

It looks like this (with the same capsule of Holy Water from the Jordan River -- where Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist):

I would suggest even taking little jobs such as house sitting and pet sitting, a little bit here and there helps.

cmtc: You would need spare time to invest in this, but it gives my stay at home mom $5000+ extra each year to add to my dad's income. She researches what brands sell well on ebay (both new and used), then goes to garage sales every weekend and picks up any of these brands she sees. She probably spends an average of 30 minutes per day listing the items and answering buyer's questions. Another 30 minutes or so is spent prepping the items/packages for shipping (she washes used clothes before packaging.) This 30 minutes also includes her roundtrip drive to the post office.

I don't know your situation, but if every cent of this income could go to your debt, and you could give an hour or so to it everyday, you might be able to get $1500 in three months or so. Selling on ebay is a good idea right now because more people are tight on money and are looking for used items on the internet.

God bless!

Your welcome cmtc! I know God will help you to resolve your debt and enter the convent, but the process can be rough. I feel badly for everyone who wants to enter religious life these days, because most are fully/partially financially independent, and paying off debt is not a very good 'reward' for choosing to sacrifice your life for God..Heck, we should be paying religious for all they do for us!

Making rosaries is also a great idea! HB's are so beautiful.

Be assured of my prayers as well.

Do you knit, crochet or make crafts? Look on etsy for some ideas on what you can make and sell on line, it is amazing what people buy!
Also, make an appeal through your parish newsletter if that's is at all appropriate. I am sure your Catholic brothers and sisters in Christ would be more than willing to support your entrance.....

Add a prayer request on phatmass too.

Prayers for you and your situation.

Is that US or Aus $?
