ToJesusMyHeart
Just wondering, is it "proper" for the sanctuary to have a crucifix? I went to a new parish for Mass this evening and they had a statue of the Risen Christ instead of the Crucified Christ, and I was just curious if this is appropriate. I've always loved seeing the crucified Lord at mass because the mass is the re-presentation of his suffering and sacrificial death for us. Thanks! cappie
From the General Instruction of the Roman Missal: #308. There is also to be a cross, with the figure of Christ crucified upon it, either on the altar or near it, where it is clearly visible to the assembled congregation. It is appropriate that such a cross, which calls to mind for the faithful the saving Passion of the Lord, remain near the altar even outside of liturgical celebrations. If there were no no crucifix by on or near the altar then the Mass would be illicit, or not celebrated in accord with the requirements of the law. However, a Mass celebrated in this manner would still have a valid consecration of the Eucharist. Furthermore, it would still fulfill one’s Sunday obligation.
