CatherineM
In the old days before the "pee on a stick" revolution, the pregnancy test involved injecting a sample into a rabbit and seeing if the hormones caused a change in the rabbit's ovaries. So a rabbit had to die every time whether the woman was pregnant or not.

AnneLine
Papist, so happy for you & Mrs. Papist & Family. However.... Now somebody will come along and say, 'Oh, those Papists! Those Catholics! They're rabbit killers, you know... .I read it on PhatMass.' And THAT is how the next persecution will start. Truth. MissScripture
I understood this reference only through an episode of M.A.S.H. Congratulations.

hey, me too!
Same here! Glad I'm not the only one. Who says watching TV isn't educational?
In the old days before the "pee on a stick" revolution, the pregnancy test involved injecting a sample into a rabbit and seeing if the hormones caused a change in the rabbit's ovaries. So a rabbit had to die every time whether the woman was pregnant or not.
I kind of thought so, but I'm thinking they were a lot more likely to have other supporting evidence of pregnancy than now, where you can take a test before any other symptoms show up, so the rabbit dying (or rather, being killed) was more likely to indicate that there was a pregnancy. At least that's how I took it.
