Annie12
Mass today was awkward. There was a visiting priest there today and he did everything very differently. On top of it he seemed like he was rushing through it. I was asked to be an extraordinary minister of communion to day so I did. So I get up there ( which was during the lamb of God btw. I though that was very strange he wanted me to come up then) and he starts directing us and pointing at us to come closer and the I wanted to receive the holy Eucharist on my tongue and he just stared at me blankly then I put out my hands and he went to give it to me on the tongue so I put out my hands again and received it that way. SHEESH! I was as red as a ripe tomato by then! It was quite awkward...

[/quote] maybe it was just an off mass for the priest. remember, he is a visiting priest to your parish but your also a visiting parish to him. maybe in his last parish there was not a single person who received on the tounge or the way you did it confused him. it could all be honest mistakes. by the way, our em go up to the alter at the lamb of God part also. HisChildForever
Depending on the way you receive - do you tilt your head back, hold open your mouth after "amen" etc. - he might not have realized you wanted to receive on the tongue and hesitated out of confusion. But you say that you wanted to receive on the tongue...then put out your hands...then he went to distribute on your tongue but you put your hands forward again...yeah if I were the priest I'd be confused too lol
Annie12
yeah... but nevertheless, it was still awkward...
xTrishaxLynnx
I always put my hands behind my back, so there's no question. I've found this helps.
HisChildForever
It happens - sometimes you have to make a quick judgment call. I receive on the tongue too, but there've been a few times this year I decided to receive on the hand. For instance, this one extraordinary minister was a tiny lady and I'm tall so to prevent mishap I received on the hand.
she_who_is_not
During an ordination, two priests brought communion up to the choir loft and I thought we were going down for communion and I walked past the priest and then had to turn around and come back to receive. It was awkward. I hate that feeling, but it's good for humility.
Lilllabettt
this exact same thing happened to me this past June. I was visiting some Sisters. Most all of them receive on the hand, so I thought I would too, just to make everything easy for the dear Sister who was distributing Communion. I must have had "tongue receiver" written on my forehead though, because I put my hands out, and she went to give the Lord to me on the tongue, and there was this awkward switcheroo where I changed and she changed and we both changed again until we could match up. We found each other after Mass and had a good laugh over it. She told me: hand, tongue, doesn't matter, the Lord comes to us, either way. ConfusedCatholicGuy
At my old church I would receive by hand exclusively. After going to seminary for a year and getting acclimated to receiving on the tongue, I found that it was awkward to try to go back. Since then I have switched parishes and they are much more open to receiving by tongue. In fact, receiving by hand is the exception, not the rule. NonNovi
Annie, did you kneel? If you receive on the tongue standing it's harder for the priest to see what you want. If you kneel and stick your tongue out, he'll realise it much faster. And just keep your hands like they're glued together
mysisterisalittlesister
Awkward EM situations happen. When I went up for Communion once, the EM held up the host, said, "the body of Christ", saw me, and immediately dropped the host back into the chalice and gave me a host that was broken in half instead. It was weird and awkward
got2luvjc
We used to have a very old monsignor (spelling?) at our parish, one mass we said the Our Father twice. I think another time he skipped one of the prayers (the Creed I think) . It's ok, he still loved God and we did too
Noel's angel
We had an elderly priest at a week day Mass once who got to the Sanctus, forgot where he was, and started the whole Mass again. No one flinched. Life isn't perfect, priests aren't perfect, and I think once we get into the way of making a point out of every apparent error or slight mix-up, we have lost sight of our own imperfections and of the reasons we are at Mass in the first place.
